I know the feeling, your happy that you found out you did something wrong but pissed that you wasted so much time, sometimes I look in the mirror and laugh. It is great to read that you are moving ahead.
Make sure you check your compression to ensure the valves are seating, I hate to think that you could have bent a valve but it is possible, I know this from experience. Shane ![]()

If I might add my 2cents. It takes a secure individual to laugh at oneself while alone in a garage where the dog/cat can hear you and MAYBE the wife/significant other/offspring. But when you display it for the Pelican world to see/hear, that takes a chunk of gonads. You quickly becoming my hero. I hope to attempt your journey soon and am damn glad to have this thread as a guide. Thanks!

Without the likes of Aaron and Henry, my project would be a total disaster if left to my own means. I understand most things mechanical and am for the most part (other than a short stint at the Honda motorcycle school back in the 70's) self taught. That in itself can be a recipe for failure and I have seen plenty of that with other projects. The key is to stay with it and never give up. I sound like a football coach.
I had a 30' go-fast boat 10 years ago during my first mid-life crisis and I built blown 496 GMs for it. 90 mph for about ten minutes and "BOOM". I had problems getting the fuel and timing sorted. The weird thing was that the motor breaking didn't bother me; actually I looked forward to it. It is amazing how much you learn through trial and error. The biggest difference between the boat and the 911 is that I could replace both motors in the boat for the cost of the one build for the 911. I'm trying to be smarter about it and when dumb-ass things like not reading the dial indicator correctly come up I just have to remind myself why I'm doing this in the first place; because I absolutely love it! Ok re-focus now.....
So this might be a dumb-ass question but that's all right because it's still just a question. Back to pulleys. Has anybody tried cutting the two pulley, pulley in half making it a one pulley, pulley? I am wondering if this could be done then balanced at the machine shop. $150 plus for a pulley seems like money I can spend elsewhere.

OK, It's been a while. I washed my digital camera with my favorite sweat shirt and have not been able to take any pictures of the progress. Today the beast lives. Fired it up at 4:35 PM CST this afternoon and it lit right off. I have an oil leak on the left bank that looks to be a rocker shaft but there is a lot of oil coming out. I pulled the valve cover and made sure it had a good seal and tried again but the same thing; oil after about a minute of run time that looks like it's coming from the #1 spark plug area.
I'll look into it in the morning but I did run the motor for about 20 minutes at high idle for the break in thing. I am here to tell you this motor has some snap. It revs instantly and very willingly. It's like a light switch; can't wait to drive it. Anyway, my wife is going to get a new digital camera this weekend and I'll take some shots and post them of the installed motor. Lindy |

Glad you got it going, I got mine going as well. I ended up torquing my rocker shafts tighter than spec.
I am sure you will get the leak sorted, it could also be the can seal but probably the rocker shaft like you suspect. Good luck, Shane ![]()
