Twin Plug Distributer question
I have done the search with no definitive answer found, would really appreciate some advice here.
I have my motor (pic below) out for a displacement increase and a few mods and was thinking of addressing the issue of my distributer. It is an early Andial modified distributer that has worked great but uses the expensive cap & rotor as well as being hard to find. I would like to know if anyone modifies any existing cap/rotor set like the Jags that would fit my distributer? Next option would be if anyone could modify my current distributer to take one of the more available and less expensive cap and rotors? I know there are better twin plug set ups out there but in the name of saving some money I would rather work with what I have if possible. Thanks, Jimmy ![]() |

Jimmy,
AFAIK, Aaron Burnham at Rennworks is the only one making a cap adapter and rotor for the Marelli (Jag) caps that fits a Bosch unit like yours. Just remember, those caps and rotors aren't dirt cheap either and without an upper bearing like the original Bosch RSR, Marelli RSR, or aftermarket ones, those will not last a long time either due to bushing wear. My best suggestion would be to sell your distributor and buy one of the new ones that have ball bearings to protect the integrity of the cap and rotor.

Here are few pictures of the Rennwerks distributor.
It was developed at Supertec and is the only twin plug distributor we use. The rotor is the brain child of Aaron and is truly a work of art as are all of Aarons projects. Steves advise is well thought out. Your best bet is to sell the distributor you have and buy a custom made distributor built by Aaron @ Rennwerks. Rennwerks Inc. Ok guys, thanks for the response and advice, appreciated.
Another question, the distributer is in great condition, the cap/rotor have about 2,300 miles use on them so they are in good shape. I have no idea what this set up is worth, what would be a fair asking price here on the boards for my distributer/cap& rotor? Thanks Again, Jimmy |

That would get you most of the way to a Rennwerks custom distributor.

12 pin dist.
Jimmy, we make a billet 12 and 6 pin dist. the 12 pin uses the jag cap/rotor that are easy to find and priced reasonable, There are many here on Pelican that have our setup, take a look at the pics on the website and call me if you have any questions.

I'm confused - who makes who's 12 plug distributer? are the JB, Supertec/rennworks and Rennsport distributers the same? do they all use the jag distributer cap / rotor? I also think it is a little optimistic to think that the jag cap and rotor are going to be readily available for awhile - who has seen a v-12 jag driving around recently?

The JB Racing distributor is a beautiful billet distributor made for scratch, incorporating American automotive parts, that uses a Jag cap and custom rotor made by JB Racing. The Rennwerks distributor is a Porsche distributor made by Bosch with a billet adapter that converts a single plug distributor to a twin plug distributor. It also uses the Jag cap but the rotor is another peace of art designed and manufactured by Aaron Burnham. The design for the conversion pieces and the rotor are were taken from the Marelli twin plug distributor and are direct replacements for the Marelli parts. The Jag cap is now and will be available for the foreseeable future because the are being manufactured by an after market company and Jaguar claims to have 12,000 in a warehouse in Kent. Although I have never seen the Rennsport distributor I assume it is a twin rotor Porsche distributor, built By Bosch as used on the 3.6 Carrera 2 and 993 Porsche engines. These distributors have no provisions for internal electronics other than a mark sensor. They are also devoid of an appropriate advance curve but these issues are easily overcome. We converted our first 3.6 distributor back in the early 90s for a Porsche club racer and found that it worked well but was a little cumbersome and had issues with breaking the belt. All three systems can work well with the only real issues being cost and aesthetics.
