Big Boy Turbo mods

The big boy turbo needed a couple of mods to make it fit properly, but with any luck the mods will be done this week so we can do some road & dyno testing:D

Good Day To Dyno

Today is shaping up to be a dyno day, so we can see what differences the bigger & better IC and Turbo make at the wheels:D

Where the hey is that popcorn emoticon when you need it?

And we are all waiting for the good news......

JeremyD 03-08-2013 01:37 PM

Dude.

CaptainCalf 03-08-2013 03:06 PM

LOL, the mods for the big boy turbo are done. Road testing then dyno tonight...if all goes as planned tomorrow I'll be in Pampano loading the torque monster up for the 3 hrs trip home...anybody up for a spirited run down the back roads????

PFM 03-08-2013 08:31 PM

So wish I could join you for a drive but I think I would be hard pressed to keep up.

CaptainCalf 03-11-2013 06:16 AM

Maybe after 12-hrs of Sebring

All was going really well right up till dyno time but then cylinder#6 started missing. We think it's the ECU, so the plan is to swap it out under warranty for a new unit and then try again to dyno tune it next week after the 12-hr race this weekend.

Modified drip tank

The new ecu seemed to correct the misfire issue, but we still have one more nagging issue. The turbo smokes at high rpm, but not at idle. The scavenge pump can't keep up with the turbo oil feed rate at higher rpm, so we are going to add a gravity drain line in addition to the scavenged line using a tank setup similar to this one:

Drip Tank Mod

Okay, we have the RearlyL8 duel outlet drip tank in hand (thanks Brian!) and it's currently being modified so it will clear the TiAL wastegate then we plan to run the 2nd drain line into the sump via the oil drain plug, which I think is M20x1.5. Then once we confirm oil is no longer backing up in turbo at RPM we can finally be able dyno tune Big Red!:D

Great, I bet Brian was just finishing my new headers and now they are delayed because of this! ;)

LOL, don't blame me for your headers cuz nearly as soon as I emailed him he had the kit in a box and on the way to me, so I think it was on his shelf alreadySmileWavy

Turbo oil return lines plumbed

Finally, the smokin turbo problem has been resolved and with any luck I'll be posting up the dyno results of the big boy turbo later this week, but I'm not holding my breath yet:rolleyes:

Heck it's only been 10 months now since I finished the build and 4 turbos:p

Anywho, today the 930 is getting a good ride height adjustment and alignment then some road testing (read boosting down back roads) then tomorrow is dyno day:D

Should we take a pole on HP/Tq numbers at the wheels? I'm pulling for 500 ft-lb at the wheels on torque and don't really care where the HP come inSmileWavy

Side Note: Boosted my jeep last week:eek:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366053570.jpg

Ok, do you have an inline restrictor for the inlet on the oil line?
I guess we think alike in more ways than the 930, I am an AEV dealer and just for giggles I am building a monster stroker XJ with some of AEV's 13year old trick bag stuff. ARB, Warn and the like will also be well represented but no Chinese smittybilt. Nice JK though! I gotta keep it all American and I guess Australian (ARB), Old Man EMU.

SCHNELE 04-15-2013 11:53 AM

Keep an eye on the CHT of that 3.8 with the boost you will be in a world of hurt. Let me know if you want a 3.6 to drop in there or even a Hemi 5.7 or 6.4

We had a Garrett sized restrictor initially on the feed line with the BB turbos, but now that we have a big boy turbo with a journal brg we don't need the restrictor. That was part of the problem we had so much oil entering the turbo at RPM the scavenge pump couldn't keep up....

Yes, I'd also recommend US parts for your XJ too. I just didn't do my homework before ordering aftermkt parts for my JK...paid for it in re-engineering that I had to do to make everything fit:rolleyes:

Changed out the thermostat to a lower range unit and it actually runs a little cooler then before on averageSmileWavy

More to do

Big Red is home again. Boost limited to make 350Hp/350tq until I get a better fuel pump installed up front cuz the stock pump can't keep up after that. I'll be ordering a Bosch 044 and maybe two...

Ride Height Advice while addressing fueling

Planning to tackle the ride height setup when I add the new Bosch 044 fuel pump up front. I already have larger torsion bars up front and plan to add adjustable spring plates in the rear so while I'm in there I'm considering adding larger torsion bars in the rear too.

I think factory rears are 26mm. If I go to 30mm would it make the ride too harsh for the street?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1366828839.jpg
