Where are the '78-'79 8.5:1 pistons and cylinders?

I'm rebuilding my 1978 911's engine to stock specs. By my inexpert eye, the Mahle nikasil cylinders should not be reused. Vertical scoring visible in all of them. 1978-79 pistons and cylinders are not even listed on Pelicanparts... not even an entry with NLA. On ebay, there is actually one seller currently listing these. But, just one, whereas there seems to be several listings for 1980-83 9.3:1 sets. Are these that rare? Does no one want them? Do people just drop in 9.3:1 sets keeping the early big bore heads and call it a day? What's the story? Couldn't find much comment of the forum about this.

I understand nikasil can be replated. Is that the way to go?

The Mahle Nikasil sets come up for sale from time to time. The 8.5 CR are most common, the 9.3 CR a little harder to find and the 9.8 CR Euro almost impossible to locate.

The 9.3 CR sets you are seeing on EBay are likely Kobelschmidt Alusil.

You can post a WTB ad on the classifieds to see if anyone has a good Nikasil set or you can have your cylinders replated in Nikasil assuming your pistons are good.

PM me if you would like more details

Put in the 9.3's. They are a drop in replacement. Might want to run premium afterward.

If you are in the market for a set of pistons and cylinders for your project, give me a call or send an email. We can supply new 8.5:1 Mahles.
We have a huge selection of good used and reconditioned Porsche 911/930 Ps&Cs in stock as well.
8.5:1 Mahles, no problem.
