Looking for ideas on how to paint my engine
I have my 3.0 dropped doing a top end rebuild and headstuds. Just cleaned up and sandblasted most of the parts. Anyone have any photos I could get ideas from on how to paint the fan, shroud, etc????

Henry,
Those engines are works of art. I propose these could be made into a calendar, I would buy one. -Henry

I was going to mention re. sand blasting.
I've read one needs to be very careful when using sand blasting around engine parts.

Agree with above, although some items don't present too much problem, as they don't have hidden cavities. Wouldn't go near grit blasting for things like crank case halves, cam carriers, heads, barrels, etc.
I'm about to deliver a few items for vapour blasting tomorrow (timing chain housings, A/C bracket, Carrera inlet manifold)....less harsh than sand/grit blasting and doesn't damage mating faces. I believe it also has a very mild peening effect of the surface, meaning the items don't go grimy looking if touched with greasy fingers. |

I like the peening affect - should keep the surface from getting blochey or as you say covered in greasy finger prints. I have no idea if this is available near me.

A 30sec Google later, and I'd found a few companies offering it; thankfully one is only a 1.5hr drive from me, on the way to one of our offices (and they've done Porsche stuff before). Looks to be more expensive than bead/grit blasting, but I guess you save on not needing to paint/powder coat the item afterwards Spence. |

Here you go chaps, parts collected the same evening on the way back home from work, absolutely chuffed to bits with them.
![]() ![]() ![]() UK guys - if you need anything vapour blasting, then Dave @ TSR Vapour Blasting in Sevenoaks is a great bloke; he bent over backwards to help and get them done, to save me having to make a return journey....really good service, unusual these days. ![]() Yeah, I have to say, when I offered the chain housings up to the crankcase yesterday, they did make the case halves look shoddy! Despite hours and hours (...and hours...) cleaning them. Now waiting for the phone calls from the powder coating and plating shops to go and collect more bling...satin black (30%) covers, which I'm going to polish the Porsche text on, like one of the pics above....hopefully the satin black will look not so much retro but gun "technical".....and dozens of items in new zinc/passivate. |
