Possible for 15k?

Hello everyone, I have read a lot of threads on the best way to increase a 3.2 911's hp and ft lbs. Right now my car dynos at 240 hp and 195 ft lbs with a SW chip, SSI's and M&K. I would be very happy to reach 260 hp and 220 ft lbs and that is my target. Basically a 8% hp and 12% ft lbs improvement. My idea budget is 15k or less. The car is a low mile Euro so maybe the old P&C's will also have a used value.

Anyway do you guys think I can manage a 3.4 Mahle conversion and valve job for 15k at a decent east coast shop and get the improvements in power I am looking for? Shall I also do mild cams or is there not much extra benefit?

Thanks for any input.

I am about to do some mods to my ī87 Carrera that I expect 260HP with only bolt on parts, no internal modifications. I already have a Fabspeed RSR equal lenght header system and 2 in 2 out race muffler, no cat. This alone should make a 15-20HP difference compared to the old exhaust. I will change the Motronic ECU to a Canems fully programmable ECU with a coil pack ignition system. This system is tailor made for the Carrera 3.2L, and is a direct replacement for the Motronic, plug the old one out and the new one in. The ECU comes with MAP sensor TPS and as an option wide band Lambda (O2 sensor). With an extrude honed air intake and get rid of the old style AFM, the engine will breathe much better. The complete system, fully mapped and programmed is just under $3,000. So with $15k, you will get a long way! I would have choosen LN Engineering 102mm P/C set, that will give you close to 3.7L. If you combine this with Dougherty Racing cams: the RSR 3.8 cams will be usable even without ITBīs on the Canems set up, with no reversion issues. For the 102mm pistons you would ned to twin plug the heads. With this set up you should get close to 350HP.
Maybe you will be short on you budget for all this, but if you chose a 3.4L set, you can still use the RSR 3.8 cams, and get a healthy 300HP.

Have you visited the 911 chips dyno section? They have several different engine configurations, and although not all the information is given sometimes, you can get a pretty good idea of what might be a typical result with such mods as what you are thinking.

As far as cost, if you use a combination of Pelican parts website, Wayne rebuild book, Bruce Anderson's book, and Ollie's machine shop website, you can get a good idea on cost too.

I would be inclined to stay with your current P&Cs, single plug, get a good machine job on the engine, get a good set of bearings from Steve Weiner or Henry Schmidt, recondition rods with ARP bolts, DC19 or WEb 20/21 cams, and custom chip, and I think you'll be close at least in corrected crank HP. Then if you're not quite there, remove weight to get to you performance target. Should be do-able.

If you go ITB's or carbs, it's another order of magnitude more expensive to really get you're money's worth. Just my noob opinion.

If you really want to be budget-conscious, you can bore and replate your 3.2L cylinders to accept the 98mm 3.4L pistons. Places like EBS Racing, US Chrome and Millenium Technologies.
Plus i'm sure somebody would like to have your Euro 10.3:1 pistons, which would offset some cost by selling them. The key is to make sure your replacement pistons are sized to your replated cylinders. So you need to obtain the new piston diameter in order to be able to specify the bore sizing/piston-cylinder clearance.

If you're doing higher compression pistons, you'd be foolish IMO not to select a more aggressive cam profile.

Valve job is not uncommon on the Carreras in terms of valve guide wear. If you have worn guides worn beyond allowable spec, the valves are probably in need of replacement. I needed all new valves on my '87 top end years ago. New valves are a little pricey on the exhaust side. Intervalves makes a good quality valve, so those can save you some signficant $ over OEM Por$che valves.

You'll need to get your chip remapped for the increased displacement & cams.

Thanks for the responses. I expect I will need valves aswell. I was figuring 5k for P&C's, maybe 1k for cams and try and get under 9k for all labour, valve job etc. I am not so much trying to be budget conscious (as the engine is good now) but more keep myself in check as its not worth it to me to spend over 15k or so on this specific engine and car which is just used on the street. Just a reasonable improvement will make me happy.

Bruces book highly rates the 3.4. More than anything I want more ft/lbs for street use and this is what got me interested in the 3.4.

The camens ecu sounds interesting as well. I am not sure if anyone has actually validated it yet.
