2.2L U-Boat engine
I bought an engine, Case # 901.101.102.3R , Serial # *6119625* around 12 years ago seized as tight as a drum . I had planned to learn about the Porsche 6 cylinder engine with this as low cost fodder, since I make mistakes regularly. Anyhow, I just never got to it until a couple of weeks ago. Going by the numbers, I pulled the right cam carrier and heads 4,5 and 6 with some difficulty. When i carefully got them off I found cylinder 4 full of an oily rusty mess (trying to get images downloaded) and the piston stuck I guess the good news is the crank and internal components appear to be okay. Here's my question... What's the best way to get the piston out of the cylinder? I don't want to start whacking things unlessa absolutely necessary. Also, am I correct in thinking this engine is out of a 71 911 Sportomatic?

If you point the cylinder upward you can poor some Coca Cola in it. Regular so no diet stuff and leave it in for day or so. I have heard that this does the trick.

On frozen motors where the rings have rusted to the cylinders, I usually sacrifice the cylinders. I cut a deep groove in the cylinder with a cutoff wheel. Then I use a chisel to split them open. This frees them from the the piston and allows them to be removed and tossed in the recycle bin.
My experience is that repeated penetrant soaking and heat applicatio usually does not work

Thank you both for your replies... It'll going to be a long process, but I'm sure I'll get it right in the end. I've heard of the Coke remedy and will put it into play if needed. I have to assume that the cylinder is toast anyway, so sacrificing it will work too.
Question... Will the piston (assuming it spec's okay) be able to be mated to another cylinder? Thanks again. |

If you're not in a hurry I would repeatably apply penetrant, low heat and light impacts and try to save as much as you can.

You are correct, it is a type 911/06 "Rest of the World" Sporto.
Is the other side of the case also 3R?

Success! Not much heat necessary. I let penetrating oil do some of the work although I really don't think it got past the first ring. To answer your question, djpateman, yes, the case is marked 3R on both sides. Now I get to develop my rebuild plan, yay! Thanks again to all.

Was the motor stored outside ?,looks like water damage,shame looks like you be after a replacement b+p to start with.
Good to see you have it freed but I reckon you are in for some work on this motor,good luck.
