I thought once you relieved the original tension of the bearing seat that they were no longer suitable for use due to a high risk of moving or spinning? I'd rather not waste good bearings, especially considering some of the reported QC issues with glyco bearings, but also do not want to risk destroying a case, crank, or both, while trying to save $400.00. I must make this decision twice over this winter and want to get it right. Anyone have success or horror stories to tell?

One thing I have to say is I got a brand new glyco #8 bearing and it was .0025 out of spec (too big). My old one spec-ed out good so I'm reusing it.

Wow. I will definitely check my new #8. I did get it from Porsche directly so it should be OK. Will check nonetheless.

Coincidentally i'm really pissed I tossed my old #8 that came out of the first rebuild. Second rebuild I installed a new one and that one was wasted by the oil starvation. Would have been nice to have the first #8 and save me a few bucks......

Currently removing head studs. Have 3 of 24 removed, using double nut method.
First 3 were tight. Did not use any heat. Just lots of ATF and acetone mixture.
Thinking of get one of those universal extractors, don't plan on reusing studs.

Will post some pics tomorrow night.

Placed an order with Henry.

Hey Captian

How do you like the DTA Fast Ecu? Thinking of going SDS EM 6F. Have my injector blocks and fuel rails. Was originally going to go Megasquirt. But SDS is so simple to tune.

head studs

If you have a good 1/2" impact gun try double nutting the stud with a 17mm/15mm wrench size nut with the larger size close to the case and with a 17mm socket rattle it and it works very well, the ATF/ acetone mix is amazing too just be careful with heat near that !

If you're not going to reuse the studs anyway, I found heat on the case and a pipe wrench on the stud to be quite effective. :)

Thanks Guys

Started removing the head studs. I was using double nut method. First stud came out easy. 2nd stud would not budge. I decided to buy a stud extractor kit, from Princess Auto. I love this store. It the Canadian equivalent of Harbour Freight.
Any excuse to buy a new tool. Managed to get the rest of studs out except for lower right exhaust on cylinder 4. Guess I need to pickup some propane, and heat up area around the stud.

This may not be totally relevant but I have installed and tuned two DTA systems on VW 16V Turbos. While the system is capable the support both through the community and the company itself (they are totally worthless to deal with) sorely lacks.

I would rather run a standalone system with a good community of folks using it in an 930 application. Motec seems to be a popular choice.

No warranty expressed or implied however as I dont own a 930...yet.

Great thread. Keep it going.

More progress. Picked up a Map Gas cylinder. Heated base around stud and got it moving. Took my time, and was happy to report stud is now out.
Moved onto other side of block. Started with exhaust side studs. Again had to use the gas on all but 1 of the studs. Bottom studs are out.

Hoping to finish up studs tomorrow night. Then it is time to tear into the block.

jpilcher 11-21-2013 04:08 PM

Finished the last 6 studs. Happy to report all have been removed intact.
Need to finish cleaning the case, the heads and the cylinders.

Ask Henry to send you a set? I bet he'd accept yours in trade as "cores" to add to his supply.
