When I split the case on my SC engine, I left 2-3 nuts on the studs but a few turns from being tight. Then I turned the engine in the stand so that the mounted side of the case was on top. That way, I had gravity helping to pull the case halves apart as I tapped on the various spots at each corner. After just a little while, the two halves separated but only about 1/4" because of the nuts left in place. Then it is just a matter of turning the engine back over and finishing the disassembly. Just another way to skin a cat!

Thanks to all the advisors on splitting my 81 sc case; this site is an unbelievable resource for newbies like me. My face is a little red as I had missed the bolt in the chain housing. I used the "tapping on the engine holding mount" technique, though i don't have a cool copper headed hammer like the one in the photo!

The inside of this motor stinks to high heaven, it suffered an oil deprivation issue, so I imagine that is the smell of burnt motor oil. I am a novice, as I said, but the internals look good. The total damage I can confirm is seized camshaft, one broken rocker, and a stripped cam chain sprocket. I guess the hard part starts now…….

The heat generated by the oil problem is your main concern.
Once you get the case stripped of all parts...clean the mating surfaces and check the crank bore for size and straightness.
I suspect you will need an align bore.

Thanks to irobertson for the idea to use a bottle jack. I tried most all of the other suggestions and couldn't get it open. I used the bottle jack to apply a little pressure then using a hard rubber hammer was able to split the case.
