Are these 3.3 turbo pistons good?
I bought a used set of 3.3 turbo p&c's. I had the seller send them to EBS Racing for inspection & reconditioning. It looks like the shirts were coated, but nothing/cleaning was done to the top, is this normal? Also one piston top and top edge above the ring looks pretty pitted, is this usable? Do I just scrap the carbon off the top, or send them out again?
This is my first bottom end rebuild, so I'm trying to be thorough before I start. thanks. ![]() ![]()

Don't know about the pitting part, but it seems that one key area to check are the ring lands - are they within spec? If they aren't, reuse becomes pretty questionable.

I wouldn't use them. Looks like the bottom right one is badly pitted from continuous detonation. What did EBS say after inspecting them?

EBS noted that 2 of the pistons were unusable and were suppose to get replacements. Why they choose not to get replacements, but instead get them coated and send them out to me like this is anybodies guess. I will send them to Ollies, and see if any other ones are damaged, which I suspect they are. Thanks for the input.

Have you tried calling Don at EBS and asking him?

Don is the one that handled this job.

There's a saying I use daily at work: Garbage in, garbage out. The problem isn't EBS here, it's the pistons from the 3rd party. Carbon clean-up on the dome can be time consuming... And it's more for OCD types (lots of us present). The bottom middle piston looks out of round on the top edge. Sounds like you were advised accordingly that a couple could use replacement. There are plenty of people who take such advice and run the tired bits anyway. Decide for yourself and start writing checks.

The pistons in the photo are the replacements that EBS provided, not the original ones I thought they were. Don said they were in spec and would work, but I'm going to use them. The original parts came from Parts Heaven, and they are replacing the bad parts. I'm having the replacement pistons send to me, and I'll ship them to Ollies to blast the tops (because I'm annul) and inspect them.

Ah, with that detail your post makes more sense. I would recommend adding a thermal barrier coating or polishing the piston domes once you have the carbon off. Good luck Harold - I would also want all carbon off completely just for good measure and to allow for thorough visual inspection.

Paperweights. Look at the detonation erosion on the one at the lower right.
