New alternator fan housing, no timing mark??
Got a new fan housing from our host. Small crack, looks like it was dropped, won't affect operation....but - the new housing does not have a timing mark on it. What is the remedy for that? Do I put number one at TDC and then mark it?

The one I bought did have the mark but I verified it anyway and found it was out a bit. So yes, find TDC, (both valves closed) a dial gauge is best but not mandatory and mark the housing. I used a 3 point file to cut a groove. At least you will have 100% confidence in the reference mark.

Note that the mark on the fan housing lines up with the seam of the case, so checking the top of the piston travel, the real way of determining TDC, is unnecessary.

Oh yea. Forgot about that. That's where the old razor blade trick comes in. Thanks.

The fan housing TDC marks I've seen don't line up with the case seam.
Now you can carefully put a TDC mark in it that does line up with the case seam if you want. A center punch would work good to make the mark and a little white paint in the punch mark would make it easier top see. |

That's a great idea. I have some metal markers that will work great for that. Thank you. Almost done with the assembly. Woot woot.

Always use the case seam when setting cam timing. The fan housing mark is not accurate. If the TDC slot in your crank pulley is accurate it should be good.
Marking it with a sharpie pen and then going over the case seam with a machinist scribe makes it easier to see. ![]() ![]() |
