3.0 MFI build by www.tech9.ms

We recently completed this 3.0 engine to be used for Tarmac Rally events in the UK and Europe.
I also run a similar single plug version in my grey 911 SCR that is successful as a circuit racer and tarmac/tour event rally car here in the UK

I thought the details may be of interest to some of the readers here

Engine is based on a 911SC, aluminium block (930/10) - retains 3.0 Capacity

Layout of components, prior to build

Tech 9 Custom pistons and conrods

Mahle Cylinders, machined for accuracy (bore perpendicular to mounting faces) then plated with ceramic composite

Cylinder heads twin plugged and new sodium filled Intake and Exhaust valves installed

Ports machined for flow and accuracy of mounting to intake manifolds, Injector ports added for MFI injectors

Heart of the beast ! – here you can see the large capacity GT3 Oil pump, one piece steel Intermediate gear, Crank and con-rod assembly, cases with shuffle-pins installed on the main webs. To ensure this lot don’t burst out, secured with ARP Porsche specific engine fasteners throughout

Build completed

Details, Details……. Magnesium High Butterfly 50mm Intake system, MFI Red Top RSR Fuel Pump

Pre-Dyno – Installed on our engine test bed to bed in camshafts and set ignition timing, set throttle butterflies etc

Dyno testing – Final results 308bhp @ 7600rpm with 233 ft/lbs torque @ 5300rpm with silencing requirements met to allow for MSA event testing
Built as a rally specification engine with good low-mid range torque characteristics, the torque curve is very flat. In race/circuit specification the power output would be closer to 340bhp

I'm at the tail end of a similar build, but mine will be on carbs. What is the finish on your fan?

Great work!

Thanks !

The fan and housing is finished by careful Vapour blasting the original magnesium parts, then we apply the Chromate process, that gives the wonderful period look.

This can only be used on Mag casings, not Aluminium.

Wow, that is a thing of beauty!

Let me ask an uninformed question: why choose MFI over other options? Seems most guys are doing carbs and EFI with these ITB setups, but I'd love to understand more about going mechanical.

The slope is not slippery; in fact it is entirely frictionless.

Using MFI is about using period parts (original design and construction parts/technology from the era that the car is built i.e. Historic classes)

The efficiency could be improved using modern technology, but for historic competition use where the events are regulated and compliance with FIA Homologation, then modern intake systems are not allowed.

There is also the rarity factor to contemplate, when this engine is installed into any vehicle, its both a talking point and adds desirability/value to the vehicle in question.

It's not a cheap exercise installing this system, and for a vehicle that is not being used in FIA events you could save $$$$'s by using a modern system, but as always with anything in life, I guess its down to personal choice and budget consideration.

I would be interrested in a similar exhaustsystem only for a slightly bigger engine.

I'm interested in the shrouding - where do you source that from? Nice build - very clean.

We have them produced for us by a composites specialist in Europe.

It's not easy getting the 'honey' coloured material to look correct, it also gets better with age, as the set on my engine approaches 3 years old

we have built a number of these engines since this thread was posted

all parts available from stock to build new complete engines, or we can supply short motors for final completion to desired specification

Hey pht, maybe you could post a link to your shop/website so we all learn a bit more about your location and services? Builders with engine dynos are rare up here in the north so its good to know who has the resources.

I assume you also do full builds with EFI and the associated tuning?
