'68 901/03 Engine Aluminum Case - Can Counter Balanced Crank be retro-fitted?
I have a very early 911T Engine. 2180031 . I assume this is an Aluminum Case.
This came in the '66 911 I purchased many years ago. The original Solex Engines for the '66 911 are now out of my price range. Are all of the early Aluminum cases out of the same casting? 901/01 = 901/02 = 901/03? Would it possible to retrofit the 901/03 Engine Case to accept a 66mm Counterbalanced Crank, and new pistons and cylinders to convert it to the 130 HP version? Just wanting to get the full bang for the buck out of my '66 911? Thanks. |

Why stop at 130hp? You should talk with some experts, you'll find some here on these forums. I'm not one of them.
But my $0.02 is that I'd spend the money on cams, pistons, and reworking the heads before I upgraded the crank. Of course, once you have it down to the studs you may as well replace the crank too depending on budget. Don't forget the oil pump and tensioners too. Pretty much you will be replacing everything to upgrade your T to normal or S specs. andy |

The 66 should have a counter balanced crank because the non CB crank was for the T in 68.

Yes, engines up to 2180107 were aluminum, and the same casting was used for all models of the engine. Near the type #901/13 there should be a build # that is most likely in the 10000 range; what is that number please. A photo would be most useful.
My research is here: Type 901/xx Engine Build #'s

The number on the engine is 2180031. I can post a picture, but that is what the picture will show. So what I am understanding is the 901/03 2180001 to 2180107 were aluminum cases, with the NON-counter balanced T crank. Since I have had my green faced gauges with the higher rev limit, I wanted to go with a counterbalanced crank option. I am wondering if the counterbalanced crank bolts right in with the correct pistons, cylinders and rods?

FWIW, the 901/03 I just took apart had a counterweighted crank in it.

Counterweighted Crank
Cornpanzer, What is your engine number on the 901/03? I was told by Rennsport in Portland OR, that my engine would have a counter-weighted crank.....this would be good news. I am wondering why the HP is 110, and the Rev limit is lower on this engine? Is it due to the Cast Iron Pistons & Cylinders, to reduce cost? I always thought is was due to a NON CB Crank. So with new P&C's, and Top End upgrades, I will be able to get excellent performance. Only limited by budget....
Thanks for your input. |

The 110 HP rating is partly due to the mild cams, small ports and lower CR. These engines had cast pistons which are unsafe above 6800 RPM. "S" engines had forged pistons (among other things) permitting safe operation to 7300 RPM.
