2.2 Crankshaft play
So my starter ate my ring gear, and I could not imagine why, until I was removing the flywheel bolts. The first one I touched the flywheel backed out about 1/2". Here's a wobbly video. Thrust bearing?

Wow, that is allot of movement. I recently did work on my engine and noticed the in and out play but only 1MM or so.
But once I put the crank pulley back on, slop was gone. Is your pulley removed? Also, is it the video or does the crank really appear cockeyed like that?

The pulley is still on, I'm waiting for cam tools to arrive, and then i will get to the bottom of this. I one handed the camera, while I turned with the other. I just can't believe the amount of movement

I had to resurface my crank pulley end and it was super annoying every time I turned it to insure evenness, kept jump in and out causing my dial to go crazy
![]() Question, when you pulled the ring off, did you gradually remove it by removing each nut equally? I am sure you did but just incase you didn't install it te same way it could warp the starter ring gear.

The pulley shouldn't have any bearing on the thrust. All thrust should be handled by bearing #1 on crank. #8 is oil control, not thrust. That much play has to affect the distributor and timing inside on the crank.

Can #1 wear that much without damaging the crank?

Even if the thrust faces were gone I'm not ure it would account for all that slop.
As was mentioned-is the face not square with the case? That would be a busted crank. And as Bruce said-the pulley shouldn't make any difference. Either way you need to split the case but I'm afraid it's going to get ugly in there. Sorry Though I have a good crank here . Hopefully the case isnt damaged.
