Break-in Oil

I am using Lucas 20w-50 break-in oil for my first 20 minute engine run. My mom question is do I need to use this same oil for the next two oil changes. Or can I just go to a regular oil. Wayne's book says regular oil is fine to break in rings. Thoughts.

Tell your Mom, regular or what you use normally is just fine :-)

JK, I know you meant to write "main". Just remember not to stay too long in one RPM range.

So you think the regular stuff is fine? The Lucas is getting expensive. Although I was also looking at the Lucas hot rod oil. Still high zinc but not as much as the break-in oil.

Well, consider DELO 400 15W40 Conventional 1400+ zddp at Walmart in 1 gal or 2.5 gal, dirt cheap.

FWIW I have used brad penn oils for a long time in our vintage cars. Jaguar, Alfa, Porshce. and all the flatheads....Just finishing a new 911 motor and am going to use Penn break in for the dyno time then switch to regular Penn from there on out.

If it's too slick, it won't seat the rings.

Hi,for a normally aspirated engine I have used NAPA non-detergent straight 30w for the past 40 years.Vary the rpm with no full loads pulls & leakdown test after 500 miles.If the leakdown indicates the rings are not seated leave it in until 1,000 miles then do the leakdown again.You can use 20-50w on a turbo motor because light boost will force the top ring to seat easier.Total Seal top rings are harder to seat on normally aspirated engines as it is a harder,smoother material than a Goetze cast iron ring.Fred

The NAPA oil is made by Valvoline with no additives.The only non detergent in our area of the east.Fred

Yes, and do a leakdown before you first start it so you have a comparison.

I am a big fan (for years) of 30 wt Valvoline non-detergent.
Napa 30 wt non-detergent is the same product.

I'd never use such a heavy oil for break-in.
I also like the 30w Valvoline non-detergent, I use to use 20w on VW engines.

Where you live I wouldn't use more than the 15w40.
I'm a Delo convert as well, nice having the same oil for all my aircooled cars and my fiat tractor. I buy it by the pail.

^^^ Oh no, this is for break in on fresh rebuild to help seat the rings.

My mech used 20/50 Valvoline VR1 for break in on my motor. Was told that it would be ok to keep using as my regular oil.

It's been unseasonably warm by me so I'm not concerned about the 20w-50 in regard to temperature. I used the Lucas Break In oil 20w-50 for the first 20 minute run. I then drained and filled with Castrol GTX 20w-50 for the 85 mile initial break in. I have another 40 miles of break in driving to do and that will be drained. Today I received a case of Kendall GT-1 Competition 20w-50. I will use that for the next 500 miles. And I may just continue to stick with that instead of the VR-1 oil I was using.

So far there is no smoking. Engine seems much stronger than before. So I am hoping the rings are seating well.

I use a good Italian extra virgin olive oil for the first one minute run, then drain and fill with coconut oil for the next five minutes. If the leak down shows good at that point, then it’s canola oil from there on out.

Ran 2.7RS spec engine in on Lucas single grade 30 weight. Went through multiple her cycles & a few hundred miles .. when gets properly hot, engine tightened up a bit .. starter motor struggled a bit. Problem has gone away with first 20W50 oil change. Better viscosity at summer temps. 30W was pretty watery.
