Engine stuck, now what?
I put a wrench on the pulley and it won't budge, I don't want to force it too much. It had some water in the intake and I'm taking it apart.
I can't put the engine to TDC or whatever the recommended spot is for the cam/head teardown, can I just take it apart as is? Should I just remove the heads and send them in as complete piece for rebuild?? Any advice? It's soaking in ATF Fluid, but I don't really feel like cranking it over in any case now. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

That's what I figured, timing has to be redone anyways, just thought it was mandatory.
Also can chains be removed independently? I want to remove the heads and send them in 'as is' the rocker disassembly isn't going too well, the shafts don't want to come out ![]() |

Sorry. The timing chains seem to be very close to the cam and housing, can I remove the chains so I can remove the entire head (along with cam etc) in one go (ie all 3 heads on one side + cam) by undoing the head bolts?

Don't think you can as the cam snout is quite long and the chains won't deflect a whole lot.

Turn the crank backward and the water will come out the exhaust.

Oh, and to save you some grief, if you want to remove the cams from the cam towers with the head attached, you will have to remove most if not all of the rocker arms depending on the lift of the cam.
Once the cam is out you can unbolt each head from the cam tower. |

![]() The above procedure is fine for a regular teardown, but I fear that things are more 'seized' on then on a regular teardown/rebuild. I can't turn the crank (at all) and I highly doubt camshaft sprockets, woodruff keys, spacers, and thrust plates are going to come off ![]() But I will go slowly and surely, was hoping I could get the entire piece of and farm it out instead of shipping the whole engine (which I might have to if I get stuck). |

The reason I ask, is because of these pictures/process posted by our gracious host. The heads are removed as one assembly!

I have all the books and this forum.
I removed the 5mm, nut, caps, 8mm. The shaft won't budge ![]() Is there some tool or press I could use to get the rocker shafts out? As per usual, they are soaking in ATF fluid, usually is the best thing ever, but on this engine... about to give up and send it in to a pro. |

Sounds like there's a nice ridge in the bushing of the rockers snagging.

You can pry off the chain, sprocket and cam chain housing without removing the cams, but its tricky and probably not faster.
Done it twice to fix leaking cam seals.

rocker shafts
How long has this motor been sitting?
