Engine stuck, now what?

I put a wrench on the pulley and it won't budge, I don't want to force it too much. It had some water in the intake and I'm taking it apart.

I can't put the engine to TDC or whatever the recommended spot is for the cam/head teardown, can I just take it apart as is?

Should I just remove the heads and send them in as complete piece for rebuild?? Any advice? It's soaking in ATF Fluid, but I don't really feel like cranking it over in any case now.

No need to put at TDC for teardown.

Just get after it!

That's what I figured, timing has to be redone anyways, just thought it was mandatory.

Also can chains be removed independently? I want to remove the heads and send them in 'as is' the rocker disassembly isn't going too well, the shafts don't want to come out

Sorry. The timing chains seem to be very close to the cam and housing, can I remove the chains so I can remove the entire head (along with cam etc) in one go (ie all 3 heads on one side + cam) by undoing the head bolts?

Don't think you can as the cam snout is quite long and the chains won't deflect a whole lot.

That is a hack way to do it, and meaning no disrespect, you don't sound like you know what you are doing, so I will tell you what to do.

If you want to remove all three heads and the cam tower as a unit, you need to do the following:

1. Unbolt both camshaft bolts (later) or nuts (earlier)
2. Remove the tensioners
3. Pop out the camshaft sprockets, woodruff keys, spacers, and thrust plates.
4. Unhook the chain as you pull it off the sprocket, set aside
5. Unbolt the chain housings from the case.
6. Pop the chain boxes loose. They will NOT come off at this point.
7. Remove the head nuts and washers.
8. use a rubber mallet and work the three heads and cam tower combo loose
9. Remove the heads and cam tower, chain box will come off.
10. Do this on the other side and you are down to your short block.

Oh, and to save you some grief, if you want to remove the cams from the cam towers with the head attached, you will have to remove most if not all of the rocker arms depending on the lift of the cam.

Once the cam is out you can unbolt each head from the cam tower.

No disrespect taken! I'm here to learn.

The above procedure is fine for a regular teardown, but I fear that things are more 'seized' on then on a regular teardown/rebuild. I can't turn the crank (at all) and I highly doubt camshaft sprockets, woodruff keys, spacers, and thrust plates are going to come off

But I will go slowly and surely, was hoping I could get the entire piece of and farm it out instead of shipping the whole engine (which I might have to if I get stuck).

The reason I ask, is because of these pictures/process posted by our gracious host. The heads are removed as one assembly!

You don't need the crank to turn at all for the steps i told you. Follow what I wrote to the letter and it will work. I have done this dozens upon dozens of times.

Once you get both cam towers and heads off, remove the cylinders. If your crank was seized before, it won't be now.

That is exactly what I wrote, with more steps than pelican had. Follow it.

Go buy a few books from our host and read them before you tear down.

I have all the books and this forum.

I removed the 5mm, nut, caps, 8mm. The shaft won't budge What can I do to get them out? I tried gently tapping them out, but they are stuck well in there.

Is there some tool or press I could use to get the rocker shafts out? As per usual, they are soaking in ATF fluid, usually is the best thing ever, but on this engine... about to give up and send it in to a pro.

Sounds like there's a nice ridge in the bushing of the rockers snagging.

If the nuts and caps are out, pound out the rocker with a drift. Don't be gentle, as long as you are hitting the rocker shaft square on, it won't hurt anything. The rocker itself is probably toast.

Quit using ATF fluid too. It's not going to help. If you really want to persuade it, get a mapp torch (the yellow one) and heat up the rocker and the housing. Then pound it out.

I've torn down dozens of 911 motors and built dozens more. Sometimes force is required.

You can pry off the chain, sprocket and cam chain housing without removing the cams, but its tricky and probably not faster.
Done it twice to fix leaking cam seals.

rocker shafts

How long has this motor been sitting?

If you have to pound the rocker shafts out, you will probably score the cam housing. This may lead to leaks after assembly, no?
