3D model/render work on the 2.2T motor I'm building

I have seen keyshot. The reason I ask is your work is absolutely amazing and looks a lot like the recent renderings Singer did of their new 4 cam engine.

Thank you! Yes I've seen the Singer model renderings, they definitely look amazing. I had been planning on doing this engine for a long time but to be honest seeing the Singer renderings lit a fire under me to work on mine.

previous image made it look like I missed one of the small locking tangs for the washers. They were there but the angle/lighting hid them pretty well.

I've been using SolidWorks for a couple years and am one of those fanbois. We use Creo too, I may need to try it.

To give you guys an idea of how much work this is my machinist took 6 *weeks* to hand measure the case and correct dimensions on our model so he could come up with a machining model in SurfCAM to machine the cases. Pic below.

Remember, he was already working with a scan to begin with.....

Optimus won't need to do the inside, which is where a lot of the work is, but even a simple chain housing is a massive task freehand like this. Amazing work!

Definitely not a project for a beginner, haha. I will be modeling the interior of the case, I just don't need to be concerned with it being accurate beyond about 1mm or so. Many features will be right on the money but only because there details are referenced elsewhere.

Are you saying you hand measure each part that you then enter into the visual program?? How many hours do you think you have put into it so far?

Not sure who you are asking but I'll bite.

Yes, I am capable of making a flat 8 out of my 6 case pretty easily. Actually the impetus behind this project was a flat 12.

Now that I have spent 1.5 years and 150K modeling the case I can make it a flat 16 if i want, LOL. The only thing that matters is the flywheel and pulley ends; the middle part is easy. Adding 2 extra cylinders in the middle would be elementary at this point.

Yes, pretty much. Things that have measurements that are widely known, or listed in books i.e. crank journal diameters, stroke lengths, etc) I just use the listed dimensions. Everything else gets measured, rough measurements mostly with calipers or rulers, angle measurements down to +/- 2 degrees, everything else is typically within 0.5mm Items that aren't possible to measure with what I have get approximated or I make educated guesses based on casting or machining techniques.

I've found that if you originally learned on Solidworks, or are pretty green, you'll almost always favor Solidworks. I learned on Pro/E, and have been using every new iteration of the software for close to 20 years. So it's no surprise that I'm a Creo fanboy. Haha.
