Fantastic work! It would be awesome to 3D print a scaled version when complete.

More work on the first case half, I underestimated the amount of work the case alone would need. It's getting there though!
http://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4597/39...4ee04bb2_h.jpg http://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4680/39...1596d516_h.jpg Still obviously a work in progress. |
It's starting to look like a real engine! I've done a lot of work on it since I've posted last. Most notably I have the other case half at about 75%. I've also added the crank pulley, belt, sump plate, oil breather, and a few other bits here and there.
http://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4636/38...4925b69f_b.jpg This side came together a bit easier than the other side. http://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4683/25...ff9f717d_b.jpg The 1-2-3 case half is still only about 75% done, so both sides need work still. I've also decided to start the fan shroud over from scratch now that a few key surfaces from the cases are in. There's a bit of interference where there shouldn't be. |
Amazing Glen! Now someone just needs to take this and make a VR version of Cole Scrogham's book on assembling the 911 engine ;)

Opti... Great work.

Few more parts added, also the first diversion from stock. I decided to model heater block off pieces.

And found a bit more time over the weekend to finish up a few of the smaller items. Namely more plug wires, fan bolt/washer, distributor cap clips, and I adjusted the angle of the distributor slightly so that the teeth mesh with the gear on the crankshaft.

Still friggin amazing, Glen!

Thanks for sharing these, Glen, they're like works of art. Can you add in an inch or so of caked on grease and dirt so I can recognize them on my own car? Seriously though, they're helping me get psyched up to rebuild my 3.0 engine.
|
I mean, seriously, how much time have you invested in this?
I can't even fathom. |

I prefer not to keep track of time. It is a hobby, and it's fun for me, I feel like if I look back at how much time I've spent on it that it might take a bit of the fun out of the whole process. Similarly, I don't keep track of how much I spend on my project car. That's why I usually don't respond when someone asks for the model files. This thing is almost like a child to me (ok, not even close, I have a 11 month old that I'd do anything to protect) To have so much time, skill, and effort built into this to have someone else just take it and do with it whatever they want... I dunno. Maybe I'm just selfish in that regard. |

If anyone thinks you are selfish, they have no idea how much effort it takes to accomplish this.:eek::eek: |

I am absolutely amazed at your work. This comes from someone that has taken on a project like yours. I didn’t have any parts or drawings to rely on for dimensions so mine was done by looking at pictures and getting what dimensions I can from the service manual. I have been able to put my model in motion. Have you done that?

I am blown away by the skills. Whatever you sell from this project, I am subscribed. You are entitled to cash in on it, and I definitely want something of anything.
And do not go giving your IP away. Alan |
I am in awe of your work. It's Absolutely the best art gallery I have ever visited.

A local member of PCA posted this thread on the club's Facebook page and I was blown away by what I found! It's my engine, my transmission and my Zenith carbs, beautifully rendered. I thought that the name Optimusglen seemed familiar and remembered your 914 thread on The Car Lounge!
With your permission, I'd like to download your images and later print some of them for my office and/or garage. Do you mind? These engines are works of art - I never get tired of looking at them! Thank you for posting your work - you're very talented! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518049105.jpg |
Thanks guys! Been awhile since I've updated, had a lot going on with the day job and baby at home. Hoping to get back into part detailing soon, looking towards the timing bits and cams next.
In the meantime, here's a couple other rendered models I've been working with. These were both purchased models, I didn't create these from scratch like I am doing with the engine and the 914-6. http://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4661/38...0cb1dde9_b.jpg http://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4762/39...41c5b879_b.jpg I understand this is an engines only portion of the forum, so I'll leave it at just these two and hope I don't get in trouble. For more you can always check out my instagram account - @autoillustrated or society6.com/autoillustrated Michael, thank you for the kind words. Care to post a link of the discussion? To you and anyone else, you can certainly save/print what I've posted for personal use. At some point down the line there will be higher quality stuff available to purchase. I'm getting my computer better equipped for this stuff, my graphics card really wasn't up to the task. At which point I'll be remodeling and putting together several super high quality images which I'll have individual art prints of and possibly looking at doing a coffee table book. This all comes after the engine is complete though, and although it looks pretty good now, there are no timing, rocker, or oil pump components. I've also got to hash out the throttle linkage. It's all pretty easy stuff, but there's a lot of it. The hard stuff remaining is to detail the inside of the case a bit more. The 1-2-3 case half is probably at 80% of where I want it to be. The other is at maybe 60%. Neither of which would be suitable for casting, but perfectly fine to make some pretty exploded view pictures with. |
Thanks for the permission to save/print - all downloaded already! It'd be great to have higher-res versions later and I would gladly pay for it.
As for the discussion on Facebook, there wasn't much other than the original post and my enthusiastic response. Most guys in the club drive newer cars so it didn't get a lot of attention. I wouldn't know how to link it because it's a closed group. I look forward to seeing more of your work, both on the renderings and with your engine. It'll all be worth it - I love my 2.2 and its Zeniths! |
