Engine running rough

Over the last month I have been having occasional engine problems. I will be driving and all of a sudden my service engine soon comes on and the engine starts to run like a fuel filter problem or an injector problem. The car will run like this for a while and then it will stop just as sudden as it started. My husband changed the fuel filter, thinking this was the obvious problem, however the problem did not go away. We are wondering if because Florida now has 10% ethanol in the gas, if that could be causing the problem, or if someone has an idea of what else could cause this problem.

See if any codes are stored in the ECU.

Could be MAF, coil, O2 sensor, others

Service Engine Soon? Not Check Engine light?

Any chance of checking the computer for stored codes?

What year is the car? I think it was the '03 model when BMW got a bad batch of coils. I would have thought that those were all replaced on warrantee but there could be some that are just getting around to failing now. Those show up as misfires on acceleration and uphill grades.
