Thanks Moki, I'll have your set waiting here and help you install them next time your in town.
Steve, I played around with a design for the R1200S a while back which is what led to the alternate top clamp design for the R1100S. I would need a stock clamp in hand to get actual dimensions to go any further. After seeing and riding and R1200S it is apparent that the stock clamps are very good and don't need any structural improvement. They look pretty good to IMO so I decided not to pursue it. Here is an example of what I was going working on. I think ultimately the main element most people will need for this bike is a different handlebar mounting option. Those are probably being worked out already by Heli and others. ![]()

Just for cosmetics, a top one only like that would look good. The stocker looks kind of cheap and is like a flat aluminum color. I probably would prefer a little higher grips, though.

Verholen makes bar riser/backs for the R12S, Steve.
I was working with a fella who had an R12S and we did some prototype work on with his bike for a bit. There are some clearance issues that Verholen has addressed with their design. It's a 2-pice unit as aoppsed to a 1-piece CNC chunk like we where trying to R&D. If you need dimensions Scott, I can dig 'em up for you. E-me when you're ready. At the moment I'm tryin to get the specs for the R12ST bars...

The fixed bar holder on the R12S top clamp makes it difficult to make handlebar position changes. I'm thinking if there's room an arrangment similar to the R11S might be better with a separate 2 piece clamp on bar holder that could be used above or below the bar as well as a couple other height and angle options. Not sure if there's interference issues.
Rapid, yeah I'll take any dimension info you have on the bike just to get a little less rough on my sketch. I'll send you an email.

the top clamp isn't the problem; it's the lack of structural ingtegrity in the bottom clamp that actually is addressed; the upper is more stout as well.
regardless, these pieces are works of art.

shreddr....I'm in Jersey and will be installing clamps in a couple of weeks (when I return from Fast Freddie's). I'll be working with a mechanic in West Milford. Interested in trying to install at the same time? I'll probably bring my bike sometime mid week and work with him. My wrenching is limited and I would only attempt this install with his help.

Thanks Jony...I like them. You're right about the lower clamp being the most important as afr as resisting flex. I'm sure the top adds a bit too but you can't really tell unless you mounted it with the stock lower still in place.
me109, yes there will possibly be at least one top clamp available. I ordered both style top clamps for myself and mounted the alt clamp already. Since I don't want to go through the hassle of changing them out again any time soon I may offer to sell my original black top clamp seperately. I would probably have to get $285 for it including a new roundel and hardware. PM me and maybe we can work something out.

I have confirmations from all but one person so far on the clamps, which is really great. Thanks everyone! I just wanted to post a few more pics of the original clamp sets to show off Mike's (captainasty) excellent machine work. I really appreciate all that Mike has gone through to make these parts and even taking some undeserved pissing and moaning on my part. These parts are an awesome addition to the R1100S and give it the great front telelever performance it should have had all along. Thanks for making the project a reality Mike

No try, do or not do

I got the clamps off! It wasn't near as hard as the posts had made it look. I used a propane torch to heat the nuts (no issues) I had a 13/16 offset box end wrench that work perfect once I broke both nuts free with a torque wrench and socket, I had a 7mm socket allen which combined with a 1/4 drive breaker bar worked perfect. Now I am wondering how hard it really is to get those ball joints out, I may give it a shot tomorrow before I send them out. I had posted here about powder coating the calipers, so I was figuring I might do them while the front end is apart, imagine my surprise when I see on the back of my generic BMW calipers the raised BREMBO logo! I had no clue! Now I am definately going to get them either painted or powder coated, whichever, but they will be red! I am stoked about installing those new clamps!

One other thing, I noticed the forks seem to have an airtight seal, has anyone ever thought of putting schraeder valves in the fork caps and used air pressure to supplement the front shock? Or will the added pressure blow the seals out?

you might consider having the caliper bodies ( you WILL have to disassemble them completely to powdercoat them) kal-garded instead. a real heat dissipating coating instead of an insulating coating like powder. or genuine anodizing if they're aluminum.

NO need whatsoever to supplement the shock. The telelever is an entirely different animal than telescopics.

I've had a chance to give both new clamp sets a good run. A few of you have them installed already and several are being shipped right now. Most have sent checks and everyone is accounted for. I forgot to send JonyRR my address info so he's getting his set a little late. Sorry bud

okay, someone who's already "been there, done that" with the reinstall, help me out.
I'm putting the new T-clamps (gorgeous!) on. Torquing the nut down (upper and lower tripletree). If i get it really tight (manual says something reedickulous like 96 lb ft), the only tripletree movement that can happen is from the rubber ball joint. That doesn't seem correct to me. If i back the nut down enough to allow the nut/shaft assy of the ball joint to move (as it seems it should) then the torque value on the nut is damn slight, just finger tight really. and that sure as hell does not seem right. so--- where am i goofing up? am I overthinking, undertorqueing, or some of each?
