not to detract from their skills, but I think Carlton and Carr are using camera's/lenses in the 5K price bracket...

Steve Carlton 05-08-2007 07:27 AM

That's true, if you include multiple lenses in the total. I'm thinking the latest way to go with a DSLR would be the upcoming Olympus E-510 with the two excellent kit lenses for $999 list. I think that's an amazing value, and in many ways produces images superior to Canon and Nikon. I'm extremely pleased with the P5000. For a pocket-size, it produces fantastic images right out of the camera...

That and they're not using this forum to host the pictures. I've noticed that this place downsamples your images when you upload them if they are over a certain size.

My web server:

There's a lot of detail missing from the second image. It was compressed from 292KB to 72KB on upload.

True. If you can't get all the quality you want by compressing the image yourself to 100,000 bytes (97.65K), you need to host it yourself. Photobucket is free and also hosts GIFs and videos. If you upload to Pelican something over 800 pixels wide or over 97.65K, the quality is going to get crushed.

Lets compare side by side. Looks good to me!

That's a great looking shot. I like the way the stripes pass through it, especially the double yellow through the windshield.

WEIRD...the 800 pix came in with the saturation bumped up...maybe I screwed something up...but it appears Steve, that the 85K shot looses quite a bit of clarity...

Don't know if these are OT enough, but I've been lucky enough to have some extra cool bikes come through the shop lately, so I thought I'd share a few pix.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1178644427.jpg

The whole system "investment" might be in that range now. But lens and camera used is more like $1,350 D80 + Sigma 10-20. But I also use my Canon SD700is quite often, it's a 6mp camera and convenient for the hiking or motorcycling journeys and around $300 now.

A lot of it is (1) subject & composition / (2) proper exposure / and (3) post processing.

Steve taught me a lot. But I wasn't that into it until Brad bought my old Nikon which I rarely used, then the floodgates opened up (or wallet) ...

Rapid Dog 05-08-2007 09:28 AM

The Nikon P5000 is 10mp with a s-load of capabilities and it's still small and has a magnesium body. Even has a wide-angle converter lens available.

What bike is that Rog? I had something similar in college...

Face it, you fell under Steve's spell... He tried that crap on me, temping me to upgrade to SLR... :D

roger albert 05-08-2007 11:10 AM

The bike is an Itom. I don't know much about it yet.
The Dell'orto carb has a remote reservoir (side hung) and horizontal slide. The exact config is new to me.

OK, this next one may be more recognizable, albeit only slightly.

Beautiful roger. I want one. Interesting thread wandering. Really like the comparison shots. Interesting to see the noise around the shoulder in shoe's shots.

And as I taught Steve, the only way to deal with this sickness is think of the purchases in terms of units.....ck, you didn't spend $1,350 on the D80 with the Sigma....you only spent 1.35 units. See how easy that is to say? 1.3 here .5 there, 3.7 overthere....cake. Pretty soon you will have a whole studio full of stuff, like some sick puppy I know.....(Steve, did I tell ya about the F4S?...film still rocks!)
