Nothing better on a below freezing day than Hot Buttered Rum....

Especially after going for a ride in the freezing weather, and returning home only to realize you can not feel your feet anymore...

looks like the unauthorized place for target practice... I guess red is the preferred color for shotgun shells..

I was able to get permission to cross private land and rode up to the bank of the Arkansas River.

No, in my day it was a row of brink terraced houses, ours was a squat and my room was $15 a month for my share of the overheads, that was in 1977. When I was there in 2005 I saw that new building was in the old spot, very different times in Woolloomooloo indeed!!

I haven't done a write up yet, but did take pictures of the process... will do one someday...

Jim Radcliff up in MO. created a kit with a Stainless Axle, and brake caliper hanger to replace the BMW one, so you can use the BMW wheel with the Showa USD forks.

This thread at ADV pretty much tells it like it is.

You can get the older 46mm YZ forks fairly cheap... I went with the newer 48mm from an 05 WR450...
$350 for the forks with triple clamps and bearings off ebay. The adapter kit was close to $500. I am waiting on a custom brakeline that was $60...

So it was close to a grand. Some peeps just put on the complete yamaha front end.... wheel and all.... I wanted the heavier built BMW wheel and brake rotor. I am going to have to play with the spring rates and valving a bit this spring to get it perfect... right now I have 2" static sag, and 3.5" race sag..

But the way the bike now handles in rough stuff is priceless.... Plus mine is a 2001 Dakar... the original forks were known for breaking apart where the axle flange is cast.... they changed the lower tubes in 03 and made them beefier... Buying new tubes from BMW would have cost me $600.... So I went with a complete swap/upgrade.

HaHaHa! many years ago when I was motorcycling across Northern New Mexico, I remember seeing signs leading towards "The Thing" for hundreds of miles. I didn't stop. A single sign after passing by noted plaintively, "You missed The Thing". Never did find out what it was, did you?

If the pic is any reflection of the fact, you didn't miss a Thing.

Nice VW Jerry! Hope you have a good trip!

"The Thing" is in Dragoon Arizona, just up the road from us here in Sierra Vista. I have not seen it, but I understand it is a mummy of some sort. Hope I didn't spoil anyone's vacation plans for next summer.

'The Thing' was a movie about a big carrot. James Arness played The Thing.

Pulled out of a block of ice and then thawed. Killed all the dogs and working on the people. They got him with electricity. What a dumb movie that was....which is probably why I remember it.
