cold, and unworthy of a new ride report... but the heated grips and some longjohns helped. Sunday i covered the US/MEX border again, giving a new GSA rider a glimpse of his new world.

What kinda tires are those?

Don't you have more interesting border pictures of banditos, or trains of illegals, mayham, or black helicopters... Good thing I have Natgeo Borderwars...

Sunday was indeed a nice day to rode along the border... here is what we saw:

Now at least I know where all the stolen boats end up... amongst other's we found a brand new Toyota Truck... stripped and turned over, in one of the canyons. I think it's getting to be kind of dangerous to ride around where we were...

On a lighter note:

It was windy and cold at about 3200'... but the view of Otay Lake, San Diego Downtown and the Ocean was just awesome! We did a nice 120 miles DS ride and then I came home and watched the Chargers to to the Colts... well, what they always do to the Colts.

oddly enough, i dont think i have ever seen any illegals out there... get 10 miles from the border and you see alot of them, having given up and come to the road waiting for BP to save them.

Bandits? If i see anyone in that category comin my way, there wont be any photos... I'll be that guy going over the horizon!

the choppers are green and white

i'd bet ralf's part of the border is more action packed, although closer to Naco and Agua Prieta ours is hoppin' too.

They closed the area where we were riding, down for all sorts of activities... it is directly alongside the border. That instantly turned into even more of a paradise fr drug-runners and car-thieves.

As I said, it's not just action packed, it's downright dangerous to ride there now... we got out of there as quickly as we could, as there were many signs of drug-running and car theft clearly present...

I don't need to become a victim of a stray or intended piece of lead...

My 1953 Chevrolet Belair Hardtop

Sometimes I miss the old girl but then again, selling her is how I paid for my R12S so I've been happy with the trade:

Looks good. I like the way the formation in the background is still in the light. What was the focal length? Was it on the D700?

Hey Bill, I did this hike just for you today since I know you're laid up...
So I went to this narrow slot canyon, fairly remote access

Only problem was I was daydreaming and this fellow popped out in a fairly narrow section...
I think he wanted to fight, he was kind of pissed off.

That's why you shouldn't be listening to music with your earbuds when roaming around.

I love this picture, not only is the view awesome, but the angle makes the GS actually look like a dirtbike instead of the 2-wheeled HumVee that it is. Cool!

Yep, that's the old GM assembly plant in Tarrytown, NY. They made Stanley Steamers there at the turn of the 20th century before GM acquired it.
It was right on the east bank of the Hudon River adjacent to the Tappan Zee Bridge:

When I did the research on the car, I discovered the plant location it was made in. On a nice spring day, I drove over there. The property was closed since the factory had been torn down in 2000. But there was no lock on the gate, so.....
I parked it right in front of the stairs going into the plant. Took the pictures within 25 yards of where the car went down the line. Kind of neat.
As you drive down the slope to the river, you go right past the UAW union hall which is still open. Reminds me of vultures sitting in a tree over a dead carcass.
They're building luxury condos there now but I can't imagine they're selling out. It is a shovel ready project though, so that's a plus.....

the backyard here has a great big south facing slope, a favorite spot for snakes.
it doesn't take long to learn the difference between the sounds of a rattlesnake (spit, rattle, rattle some more) and the sounds of a king snake (which actually sounds like turbo whine when it's irritated).

king snake good. rattler bad. neither can be heard with earbuds on.
last spring we tossed two first year rattlers out of the backyard and the not-so-intelligent dogs killed a third one.

bestest ever motorcycle racer snake story:
(if you've heard this before, just stop me):

marty moates was a fast racer, good friend and a world class prankster. if you took on a night out with marty you could wake up in a grocery cart, in the middle of an empty parking lot, duct-taped in the fetal position...naked with more of your own questions than the cops would have.

marty had an old convertible cadillac, with the gigantic fins and tennis court size trunk and hood. a collection was taken up, marty's cad was "stolen" and completely covered in fake black fur (some 12 acres of sheetmetal plus bumpers and all things chrome). he loved it and kept it that way.

somehow he ends up with this big albino snake, about 4" in diameter and probably 10-12 feet long. belongs to some famous rock band guy. all i remember: fat, long, white/pink and always firmly discourage any/all invitations to "cuddle".

he has to take the snake from home in carlsbad to the rock band guy in hollywood, about a 90 minuter. two buddies are invited to go along to meet rock guy. they jump at the chance, jump in the fuzzmobile and partway down the driveway marty stops and says "almost forgot", brings out snake, drops it in car. both guys leap in the far corners of the backseat to stay.

during the drive the snake stays on the front passenger side and gets out of the sun by squirming up into the vast area under the dashboard. (apparently there's about 3,500 sq. feet up there, complete with loft).

arriving in hollywierd, they're hit up by the usual panhandler for the usual few bucks.

marty tells this guy that he'll give him fifty bucks right now if he can figure out what that horrible rattling noise is that's coming from under the dashboard.
the guy leaps at this, scoots into the car on the passenger side...on his back...looks up, screams when he realizes what it is, jumps up and just hauls a$$ down the street.

marty caught up with him a couple of blocks later and gave the guy two hundred bucks.

Yep, once you hear the sound of a rattler, which isn't like on TV, you don't forget. Also, bad thing is that the anti-venon now costs $10,000 per dose. I've probably not seen more than five rattlesnakes total in all my time here in Utah and the last thing I expected in a narrow slot in December was that guy all coiled up and angry. Wish I had better pictures but I had a wide-angle lens and was too caught by surprise.

Your other python story reminds me of a friend from Arizona who was out drinking with his buddies in the desert. They captured a couple tarantulas and put them in a cup to take home. Back on the road, heading down the highway one guy opened the lid and the tatantulas jumped straight up and out into the car. I guess it's one thing to be in control of the situation in the desert, but another in a car going 70 down the road - and into the ditch.

Reminds me of the rattlesnake round-up in Mangum, OK. Lots of rattlesnake there to eat. Yummy.
