I was doing about 80mph and he struck me in the upper left arm, it hurt like hell, but I'm glad I didn't hit a turkey.

Hey Rob, I thought that looked familiar. Here is mine from 5 minute east of Paducah, TX in 2010.

+2 is a Western Kingbird, just in case anyone is wondering... :-)

That's close to my bird strike, I was between Post and Tahoka on US380.

Texas obviously has a bird problem.

For goodness sake people. If you're going to post pictures of dead animals then please try to include a measuring tape so the rest of us will know how big your takedown was. Also please try & provide both a dorsal and ventral view and in the case of birds a clear view of the head and beak, to help forensics with a positive ID (it's such a shame to dispatch 'em to the hereafter & not even know what it was). Case in point: I can't tell if RB's shoot-down is a vireo or flycatcher. Thanks in advance. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

If you watched the movie "The Big Year" you would feel bad...

OK, mine was about 6-7" nose to tail, there appears to be some speckles in Rob's but not mine, tail feather look different too, body structure is more compact on Rob's, the neck angle on mine has changed post impact so he could only see if flying back-wards, my road had more tar or less rock than Rob's, sun angle is similar but mine was in the morning and I believe Rob's was afternoon and finally mine has a much more dramatic pose. Identification for me is easy, both are yellow/grey birds in Texas.

RBMann 02-08-2012 11:15 AM

Mr. Road-

After doing a little looking I am thinking flycatcher.

SeabeckS 02-08-2012 11:54 AM

IMHO, a Western Kingbird...very common in that area...

Ummm...don't know my Western birds as well as their Eastern kin, but you make my point: need better photos!

ckcarr 02-08-2012 12:17 PM

You guys posting road kill in this thread now?
Don't make me go there!!! :)
Cause I collect road kill shots...

SeabeckS 02-08-2012 12:17 PM

The giveaway (to me) is the gray/black under wing and tail feathers. "Most" of the flycatchers have rufous (ie, red) coloration in those areas. Though without dimensions it is hard to tell, as juvenile flycatchers don't have as much of the rufous coloration...

ckcarr 02-08-2012 12:55 PM

Gonna have to call you Jerry Lee "killer" Swartzwelder!

bradzdotcom 02-08-2012 01:25 PM

while they're supposed to be photos of interest, not specifically moto....um....sometimes i come here while eating, and you guys can be tough to swallow as it is.

if we go on a road kill tantrum, does it kill this thread's "work safe award"?

just saying.

Photo evidence says otherwise.
