Synthetic Oil ? is 3210 Miles too Soon to convert?

Have 3210 Miles on the R1200S. Is it too soon to move to a synthetic Oil? If so, any recommendations?

...I'd wait until the engine is fully broken in and the piston rings have settled... synthetic oils is not good for EVERY bike out there.

If you ask an experienced mechanic, they'll tell you to wait at least 20k to 30k miles... that's what I have gotten from every tech I have talked to over the years...

What's been recommended for my dual spark R1100S:

-One should wait until 12k miles before switching to synthetic oil for the engine.

-One should switch the drive train and transmission to synthetic the first chance one gets (ie. during the yearly service or one of the BMW recommended mileage interval services).

I think the owner's manual actually says 'not before 6000'. I was planning on going a little beyond 6000, maybe at 9K or 12K, then switching.

The older 1100S's don't like synthetic until after a hard 18k run-in and the newer R12's seem to run-in around 12k.

We go to BMW's blended synthetic at around 1500 miles or so on the R12S Race bikes, but 1000 race miles is equal to 10,000 street miles in most instances.

I did not entertain going to synthetic in my cage until 10K miles. The bores and rings of R257 engines are quite a bit harder than the average sleeved aluminum cage engine, so I would wait AT LEAST 10k before going to synthetic.

As has been mentioned....the manual states 6,000 miles for the R12S. My bike is at 2500 now and not using any oil and my R12GS was the same way, so I think they are a bit different than the oil heads. I plan on changing oil and filter at 3000 miles with regular BMW oil then switching to synth at the 6k service.

Do you get less oil consumption with synthetic?

How about his gear and rear drive oil? Should he change that?

My dealer has recommended staying with the BMW regular oil in the engine and change it every 3000 miles and to use synthetic in the tranny and final drive, good for 12,000 miles/ The idea for the 3000 mile changes for the engine is that where we live the engine is taking in dirt and moisture and needs toi be changed every 3k. So the benifit of using the synthetic for longer is nullified.

It makes sense to me... am I crazy...?

Oil consumption, or lack thereof, is normally an indication that the engine has broken in. Use synthetic only after the engine is broken in.

Book says syn. at 6k. Three new bikes and I have changed to syn. at 6k and change every 6k miles and in the trans & diff. at 12k with syn. I truley believe people over do it with regard to oil changes. keep it simple. I have had people tell me I was going to ruin my volvo because I change at 15,000 miles, well 542,000 miles later it still runs great. Different engines I know. Also don`t baby these things after 1500 miles I run`em hard, even hitting red line every now and then.

FWIW, I've changed to synthetic on ALL my bikes at the second oil change, i.e., 3,000 miles. I don't think there's much more ring seating after that, ASSUMING an aggressive but careful break in. NONE of my 10 Beemers has EVER used oil.

If you do a real easy break in, then maybe more miles until synthetic. But my feeling is that a real easy break in is detrimental to good ring seal.

YMMV.

Ditto Mal. I changed to synthetic at about 2600 miles on my 99S which I bought in fall of 98. It continues to run flawlessly. I plan to switch out the R12S at 6000 miles simply because BMW says thats what they want me to do. None of my bikes use oil. I never redline much but stay near there a lot of the time. Whatever..............I believe in that stuff and have been using it for over 25 years.
