Yep, the guy agreed to do it on short notice, laid back guy ("sure, be done by 5, come on by"), but indeed found that the alloy was hard and ended up spending 3 times the time on it he'd originally projected. It ain't a work of art anymore, but it's totally functional and all the right bits line up now. If it was supposed to bear any true load I'd be worried, but it doesn't.

Seems to me the only reason the “repair” was $600 was because it was a patch job. To return the bike to as new condition would cost much, much more.
In this part of the world the cylinder head covers alone would cost $600, let alone a new sub frame, fairing supports and all the other stuff. I dread to think what the full cost would be.

Ah, definitely true - but my goal was to get it back to running and working fine, not to like-new. You're right, the true cost of the wipe-out should include the reduction in resale value, which is, um, more than $600 ... but I bought the bike to ride it, and I've already made the mistake of taking it to the track when I didn't have much experience ... so now I have a track bike, and there's not much point in getting back to like-new, right now at least.

Those pictures made me sick, such a pretty bike.

That said, your absolutely right, its amazing how the fairing holds up on these bmws, when I crashed my R1100S the fairing was also almost intact, sure some scratches here and there, but nothing major.

600$ is amazing though, really, very cheap for that experience.
