85 MPH going downhils in Northern California with the needle deep past redline in my Honda N600 sedan. That was fast, since redline produced 70-75 MPH.

138 on the S.

230 on my 01 R1100S and it don't matter how long and steep a descent it will not go any faster. Of course, officially I have only taken it to 110 kph because that is the statutory speed limit in these parts.

Well, although there's a few pooh pooers, I'd suspect everyone here has gone out at least once and tried to pin the needle on their bikes. Even if they have admitted it or not. It's our nature.

Having owned both bikes it seemed that the r1100s speedo was off about 6-7% while the r1200s is off only 3%.

It would be nice to have 100% accurate information though.
My Harley reads perfectly true, tracking mph to mph with my GPS however. 100 mph on the speedo says 100 mph to the mile on the John Deere. If Harley can do it, why can't BMW?

Hey RB, I see you have a Harley in the background too. There's lots of closet owners here.

159 indicated bmw K1 (chip + pipe)

150 indicated R1100s (chip + pipe)

Noticed a 135 on the R12 (stock)

Must try harder on the R12 but the 110 max with panniers sticks in my mind...

Sorry no GPS validation so knock 10% off them all...

maxed out a friends hayabusa. was simply too clenched to look at the gauges then.

have had 140mph indicated on the R1100S a few times now. the bike is surprisingly calm. but you run out of road real fast. lots of great highways in southern california. but few deserted enough to hold that kind of speed for more than a minute.

Sorry no HD, that is not my N600 or my photo. I lifted it off the net. Mine was silver and I sold it in '79. My only photos are still on slides

Currently I have a GPZ550 and S. However when the mother-in-law comes over I have to claim my wife's F650 and CB400F too. She still does not know her daughter rides and would not be happy but then I have to take grief for owning so many bikes.

Top it out the 11S, /7 and YZ all the time, thee is a difference between doing it at 5 o'clock in traffic and 1am on the deserted hgihway.

BUT, whenever I get the limiter in 6th gear it faults the ABS and I have to cycle the ignition key. Anyone know why this is?

George, if you can hit the rev limiter on your R11S often enough that you can find a pattern with the ABS taking fault, then you need to go to a taller rear-end. I have a complete R11S (tall/2.53) rear end for sale but its a lot. Should cure your problem however.

Curve, I was actually planning to build a taller rear-end for my bike and then put a shorter first gear into it OR build a shorter rear with a taller 6th gear. How much do you want for yours? Also did you build it what parts are in it? I assume it has a 1200C gear set? I don't have any of my notes in front of me with all the specs.

It's funny my buddies always know when I do it, as the see the lights flick off then on. The first time they thought the bike blew up as I cycled it still at 140+ hahah

I hit an indicated 145 on two different R1100S models that I had owned. Then I bought an '04 R1.

One day I had a plan to do an indicated 150. I was on an open road and pulling and indicated 145 in 4th gear and the bike was still pulling when I hit a small crest in the road and the front came up. Whew, that was close. But I didn't hit the magical 150.

Later there was one more stretch that was even longer. No one was on it either way. Just my buddy behind me on a Speed Triple. It's now or never. I opened it up - 150, 160, 170....then I hit a bump that threw me onto the back seat! As I pulled myself back to my seat I watched the road and the speedometer ...172, 173, 174, 175....good enough. I shut it down.

Then I looked in my mirrors to see where my buddy was. At the time I had the lane splitter mirrors. They were folded in. Funny, you would have thought I would have noticed the mirrors not being functional before now. What I discovered was the wind resistance over 160 folds in lane splitter mirrors.

156 on my CBR 929RR

I got pulled over on the R1100S yesterday (less than 24 hours after titling the bike). The Highway Patrol guy mostly wanted to tell me how much he liked it and how new it looked. I was doing 30 over and got a warning. Damn, it pays to ride what the cops ride.

Dude,
Lighten up. I don't see evidence of bias against GPS at i-bmw.

How is max speed related to Darwin award but OK if you are doing it on a track? Folks here are not the usual squid contingent.

In the right conditions, I can get into a tunnel, exit between tall buildings, and then magically move a block to the north or south in under a half a second, which ends up blipping my top speed close to 200 MPH.

Besides, I've always considered threads like these to be "who should win the next Darwin Award?" Or, "who's going to be the next one to ruin someone else's life in a fiery wreck?"

Except, of course, for the few people who do it legally on tracks or salt flats...

Then again, the way I ride my S (read: steady and controlled) would probably get my membership revoked in some circles, but I really DGAF.
