i've asked that question a few times, since my neighborhood is infested with cop homes, and they often have parties i can sneak into.
from what i can tell, sometimes cops do write cops tickets and it seems to be based on one of these:
  • of everybody, "you the fellow cop" know better.
  • the arrogant cop who assumes you're wasting his time, 'cause he's a cop and all.
  • and my favorite: just plain obviously doing really stupid shiite and despite being a fellow officer, you're a complete idiot.

i've learned that the most important sticker on my bike is the California State Firemens Association (L.A. City) sticker, proudly and boldly mounted on the very end of the rear fender. can't miss it as you walk up.

i know, i know, "only to be displayed by vehicles driven by household family members" , but i've slept over at adam's house a few times, and brother scott is a fireman too and he stays here every year before the baja race, so...

My Mille would really run up top, 176 indicated............but so will lots of Jap stuff.........curious as to what top speeds on a BMW motorcycle that our mutual brothers have attained. Four cylinder big '05 K12S.........good for 175.........'07 R12S touching 160.........'08 HP2 166 (so far....more left to go), R1100S 148, R1100RSL 143 (ECTA Timing event) , 77 R100RS (cafe fairing) 151 (radar timed at La Carrera in 1987). All bikes stock except for the highly modified 77 RS.

I have only ever owned one Jap bike which I bought new because it was designed by Hans Muth. I bought the first '82 Suzuki Katana (1000-cc, small alternator) sold in Florida in late 1981. Went to light weight mag wheels and a 18 inch rear. It was the first bike I ever rode over 150 and it turned out to be very fast on the street in its day.

Yes I was, and no no no no no no no no no no no no-way did I tell him. Are you guys crazy??? I was born and raised in MT so I knew I had a pretty good shot at getting a break. And I didn't lie to him about my speed which went a long way I think. If it hadn't been a 5 dollar ticket, it would have been a careless driving ticket which was about 125 dollars at that time I believe. It was better to keep my mouth shut and take whatever punishment was coming my way. Definitely deserved it.

Now there is a funny story from Oklahoma State . . .

smart move brent. you completely bypassed the cop writes cop ticket by not bringing it up. brilliant. especially in montana.
wasn't montana one of those states where you could find roads with no speed limit at all?

i've also found that admitting speed always helps, along with knowing what the "suggested" speed limit actually is.
it's nice to have both numbers in mental ram for the pop quiz.

i once got a thrashing from the "mouse police" over at disneyland.
i passed the "do you know how fast you were going?" test with my accurate 30 mph.

when i was asked if i knew what the speed limit was, i guessed 25 mph.

i was way wrong,. but to this day i sleep well, knowing that i'm probably not the only one who didn't know.
it's the only place i've ever seen with a posted limit like this:

140 indicated on a K1200S.

135 indicated on a CBR900RR, Raleigh beltway. Really stupid. Reeeeeeally stupid.

135 or so indicated on a... yes I'm serious... K75RT. Steepest downhill I've ever seen, I pinned the throttle and zinged past the rev limiter in 5th faster than I could imagine. Nothing to do then but roll off the throttle and sit up. She ain't going no faster. That bike would do 110 all day long but that was about it. Very accurate speedometer.

120+ indicated on my Airhead, R100R. With a few mods. Probably 105 to 110 in real life. Same on an R1200GS, pretty accurate watching the GPS.

BCR, at Summit Point, I forget. Maybe 120 indicated on the straight? I'd know if I did the final turn well by my speed when I passed the tower. R1100RS, a few others, lots of 120s I think.

100 on my /5. We're not really in the big leagues any more, now.

...when the speedometer read 132 mph today, the GS did what it had done before (during the Yosemite TC ride) and let go of the front part of the plastics... it functions like a brake-shute, instantly folding back and slapping me left knee hard... it also takes care of some cosmetic parts on the aluminum panels... creates a new "wrinkled Look"...

My friend who rode behind me, just had this to say: "Now THAT looked interesting from behind..."

I guess the GS's just don't like to go that fast for extended periods of time? Or at least mine does not...

Can't compete for numbers Perhaps I can add some poetic replay of the feelings and feedback delivered as you approach 15o mph or so. for years the fastest I piloted anything wasthe beast I borrowed from my sister-- A bit of greaser(no offense to the hairstyle, Elvis)mobile.
Twas a jacked up Dodge Dart(that is correct Dart) with ATX trans, Cragars , bright yellow paint bold pinstiping--Had illusions and esthetic of other mopar offerings-RoadRunner and Caharger
And I had no friends or history with any of this-- I was a disgruntled Nerd- not passing Latin or Advanced Placement Physics.
So after she loaned me the car to go the library and it became past 9pm and then past 10pm I went East on I495 the one and only Capitol Beltway between Wheaton and the Prince Georges county line I was the only car on this then 2 lane(maybe 3, canabis injury to some of my cells) The Automatic at pedal to metal shifted into 3rd gear at about a 100, this is when the suspension (is it mainly leaf springs on the rear?) became undependable. The jacked up rear not helping anything at this speed -no aerodynamics--but hey I was young and feeding on some new found adrenaline--so even if she was fishing around I had power steering(do they call this drifting, today?) and at 138 indicated the engine a 383cu in with4 barrels was about 3/4 to redline, my sanity was called backed by a friendly angel and I returned the car unscathed..

In the back of a mustang I suppose we exceeded that speed one night in Pinnelas County Florida probably around 160 but I wasn't driving.

My motorcycle top speeds are less impressive statitistics but if I can write of the two:
one on my MG Mille GT and the other on the Concourse that I owned for 4 1/2 months I 'll put something together soon.

It was .81 Mach on a Honda 750. I sat on it in the cargo bay of a C-141B coming back from Japan. A crewmember bought it and was bringing it back to the USA. We were on NoPac1.
