Head Bolt tightening?

How often do i need to tighten or retorque the head bolts? the Manual only says at 600 miles but should it be also done when performing the valve adjustment? Or maybe periodically other than that?

What if I do not know what the previous owner did for service and if it was done at all? Im at 16,000 miles. Will it hurt to just do it as a precaution?

the reason that manual only says to tighten at the 600 mile checkup is because that is the only time you retorque the head bolts- unless you take the heads entirely off, an uncommon event.

contact your local dealer, give him your VIN #, he should be able to tell you the service history conducted by any dealer in the US.

There are some folks who recommend doing it periodically, but the majority of bikes get it during the initial service and then never again. My bike is nearing 50K and no issues.

It's not a simple torque number - you're supposed to torque to an initial value and the turn the bolt a specified number of degrees which requires a special tool. Which means that if you want to re-do it, you should back things off and start over. This sounds like an opportunity to break something that isn't broken to me.

I'd only do it if I noted leaking.

If you can't find any records, then doing it now won't hurt anything.
They don't need to be done often, as the old ones did, but I've definitely seen more high mileage headgasket failures in my shop on those that never get it done after the initial service. But these truly don't much need it. I tweak them at the 48k service, and about that often afterwards. Not often at all. Pretty close to set and forget.

What about the studs? when you pull the heads do you need to retorque the studs? There really are no head "bolts" they are nuts. And how do you torque the studs?
