Momentarily stranded in Nebraska

On our way to the rally, in Grand Island. After 500 trouble free miles, parked in front of the motel, booked room and the bike won't start.

Details:

99 r1100s 126,000 miles.

Essentally I went to start it, turned key and nothing happened, no lights, fuel pump, nada.

Fiddled with the side stand a few times, could get all the lights to light up and fuel pump on, then when I hit the starter button there's a single click and everything goes dark.

I did get it to light up (fuel pump, normal lights, etc) a few more times but it still goes dark upon hitting the starter.

I'm thinking either battery 02/08 (BMW) or sidestand switch issue.

Any thoughts? My fiancée isn't pleased, and I'm tapping on my iPhone when I should be sleeping!

Check the easy stuff first.........fuses or try finding the starter relay ( I think the R11 has one ).........then you can try swapping fuses relays to see if it will go.

If not........can you get a jumper on the battery to jump start the bike.

But I think that is the least of your problems..............you are stuck in Nebraska, you know!

Good luck

Sounds like a lose or dirty battery terminal/cable to me, check both ends of the cables.

This is a good experience for your fiancée, something she will need to get used to. The life of a motorcyclist's wife. My wife does not ride, so she just needs to know how to come get me with the truck.

Good luck and I hope you get it all sorted.

You prolly don't have the jump start mod on the starter, so you'll need to pull the tupperware and check the battery connections. Make sure that the battery cables are the first connection to the battery and not things like the Powerlet pigtail. Hopefully, you have a tool kit along with the one on the bike to gain access to the battery.

Yeah, sounds like either a dead battery (bad cell, or just not holding a charge) or a bad connection. But who am I kidding, Anton's probably got the solution for this bike's next issue even though the owner doesn't know it yet.

Those darn ignition switches...

Loose or corroded connections are the biggest DC problem on most motorcycles. Glad you are on the move again.
