Oil Thread!! Does this oil meet BMW's specs?

Bikerfish1000 posted some interesting info on another site.
It shows that 20w50 is recommended for temps above 100 degrees, but 15w50 is only recommended up to a little over 80.
Since I can't find Mobile 1 20w50 at all and it's getting harder to find 15w50 plus now know it's not as good at the higher temps we see in south Georgia, I started looking and found this info:
http://www.renewablelube.com/pdf/Bio-Synthetic%20HD%20SHP%20SAE%2020W50%20Motor%20Oil.p df

Would this be a good oil for our boxers?

Don't ride Sunday in middle-Georgia. It's gonna be 102 in the shade.

It is too slippery according to the specs it follows (SJ, SL, SM). BMW calls for SF-SG-SH. But you might notice that M1 15w50 is also API SL, sooooo...

Thanks Meeni, that's the info I'm looking for.
See anything else that would make you think it's good to use?

I too have been wondering what to do for oil since Wal Mart no longer sells my favorite 5qt jug of peace of mind, Mobile 1 15-50. On a positive note, I no longer have a reason to go into Wal Mart, which is nice!

I've been spending some time at that bob is the oil guy site Tony posted, lots of info, and a forum so if you enjoy reading that stuff, there is lots of it there. What oil to use......

For my Boxer which I ride in the desert heat and the cold of winter (in the 30s)

For my G650 liquid cooled thumper, with a wet clutch that gets the crap beaten out of it in the desert heat, and also ridden in winter (teens sometimes)

For my GSXR 600 track bike which I ride pretty slow actually, but do bounce off the rev limiter a couple shifts per lap if I get my exit onto the straight correct, it us usually pretty hot out here on track days.

And for my dear Ducati, which serves mostly as shop art, and only gets a few hundred miles a year, so I am thinking crisco will be fine for it.

Cage kicked my dog when he called that Rotella T6 synthetic stuff lawnmower oil, it is made of group III stuff, which I guess is not as good as group IV stuff. I am still brushing up on my lubricant technology terminology so I can make a good choice, which from what I have read is mostly psychology.

Decisions Decisions Decisions..........

Should I get one with a picture of a motorcycle on the bottle? If only I had a coupon this would be much easier.

Thanks Tom, I couldn't find any data sheets on Royal Purple. Do you know how it compares to the link I posted? Or where I can find Royal Purple's data sheets?

Rob, Bob The Oil Guy have info about group III, IV stuff? It looks like it's more of a forum than a factual info site. I'll give it another look over the weekend.
Thanks.

Go down to O'Reilly's Automotive and read the Royal Purple labels like Cageyar does.

I just passed a Marriott's, didn't see you there.
If you're in an O'Reilly's, take a picture of the label and email it me....

What is the difference operationally between 15W50 and 20W50?

None, at operating temperature since the engine spends almost the entire time it is running at.....operating temperature.

The first number in the viscosity description, in this case 15 or 20 is the cold flow rate or what has been historically called "winter" hence the "W".
Both oils are 50 weight lubricants at operating temperature.
There is no, none, zero difference between 15W50 and 20W50 at operating temperature.

Because of the vagarities of what "synthetic" means these days, I'm not 100% sure that Mobil 1 15W50 that is readlily available is derived from non-mineral stock (class IV and/or class V) or is it highly refined mineral oil (class III).
I've asked Mobil point blank and they have sent me emails that claim it is a real synthetic.
Let's assume it is for a moment.
The 5 quart jug was always a packaging exclusive for WalMart. Now that it is no longer sold by them, the price per quart, even with a rebate is much closer to the cost of "motorcycle" oil or low volume producers like Motul, Royal Purple and Amsoil which are certainly true synthetics.
I'm stongly considering switching to Mobil 1 Racing 0W50, a high ZDDP, true synthetic. Of note, 0W50, 15W50 and 20W50 are all the same at operating temperature.
BMWNA specs API ratings of SF, SG, SH over SL, SM, SN for no other reason than in non-50 weight grades, unless you go with the aforementioned low volume producers, you will likely be buying a lower ZDDP formulation because those oils will be "Resource Conserving". Mobil 1 does not make a 50 weight oil that is "Resource Conserving", hence it has acceptable levels of ZDDP (over 1,000 PPM combined as a minimum).

There is no detriment to using M1 15W50 at higher ambient temperature in a BMW motorcycle even with the API rating of SL.
