That's a very good point. Anyone know about changing the filter with HPE's on?

...no problem...!
...there's (just) enough clearance between the filter and the pipes...

JETHOT ceramic coated HPE in black looks pretty damn spunky on a black R12S - someone around here has done it, I'm sure

Is there a a muffler that looks as good as the HPE, without waking the dead as it goes by?

HPE looks fantastic, but ear-shatteringly loud motorcycles are not my idea of a good idea.

Noticeable, good. Annoying or intrusive bad.

Weird question. I'm removing 8 little springs with an appropriate spring pliers, then I pull the two manifolds toward the front and they're off. A matter of one or two minutes (two minutes includes peeing).
And then there's nothing between me and the oil filter. No fumbling and no old oil on the manifold.

Why-the-fü** is everybody so keen on changing the filter with the manifold in place ?

Next point: Posting from 17/6/2011 Nice that you like the HPE Bubba, you are right, that item combines best look with great sound but didn't you mention this aftermarket stuff before ? I bought that HPE muffler in 2007.

Meanwhile I have changed it to a pair of BOS mufflers, they sound great too (without that much noise) , I like the Ducati 998-look of the BOS also and the BOS provide more power (another good product is the QD pair of silencers or the Zard single silencer, both from Italy as the HPE)

i agree Lars, pulling the HPE exhaust for oil filter maintenance is simple. I have looked at the BOS uints many times as I think they would be a perfect match to the black R12S, I also like the twin downtube. can you post a sound clip?

Lars, is the HPE simply a tuned open exhaust?

tuned open ? Sorry, maybe I need a little clarification / definition / translation ?

The HPE manifold (especially the narrow version that fits the narrow Ilmberger bellypan) is very good, concerning power output. The muffler is not too bad, but not within the top group (concerning power output), but 135 hp (DIN) is also easily possible with a complete HPE system. (you'll also need some extra stuff as Power Commander Mk. V, BoxerBurner and Piper-X air filter for that)

Most of the HPE's noise reduction is done in the middle part of the exhaust with the catalyzer. That's why the muffler is so slim.

@Jeff: Will see if I can aquire a soundfile of the HPE manifold/BOS silencer combination with the mp3 player of my wive. Please gimme some time.

Filter is no problem at all...the only tricky thing is draining the oil. But you can do it easily (a) by turning upside down the bike or (b) using my invention N678 ( weld a 10mm 8 allen to a blade to provide the leverage and have a small wooden chock just in case).

Other than that a full HPE is 1M miles ahead of anything out there (aesthetics above all, he he).

PS: Forgot to mention that L-sensor connecting box requires some zip ties (cable length is 10mm sorter than ideally required).

That is an HPE system that is no longer produced.

Good luck searching for a used one.

Cheers

Are any systems produced at this stage? The bike is old (around 8-9 years), the numbers were limited...
That little 10-year recycle emblem is coming current soon and they will have to be disposed of.

Funny seeing photos of my old bike pop up. It still remains the one bike I regret selling to this day, never enjoyed the Multistrada like I did this beauty.

I second that, Col. R1200S for the MS1200 was a mistake. There are others though that I should have kept.

Now I know why Van Harten has such a great collection. They don't give the bikes back...

And Ro Loo disappears like a man in "Hostel."
