All people who drive cars...

Are dicks!!!

No, seriously though, I came out of work about an hour ago to find my previously in great condition '99 R11S to be damaged. It was apparently backed into and picked back up, although no note was left.

Right side mirror glass busted out with scuffs on the plastic housing. Right valve cover damaged, as well as right side plastic on the tail piece. A couple of other nicks and scrapes. This blows. I've has about five months and 5,000 great miles with the bike. Hate to see it beaten up and cant really part with the funds to buy new parts or pay the $500 deductible.

I had to grieve to the people who would understand most, thanks guys!

Are there any security cameras on the lot?

Defensive parking

Bummers! I search for parking spaces in FRONT of cars, hoping that they'll at least see me. Not always possible but you can try. Other alternative which torques some drivers off is to take a whole space parking parallel to the curb. Unfortunately, no place other than your garage is totally safe!

Talking

No security cameras nearby. And I parked near an entrance to a parking lot leaving 3-4 between the bike and the nearest car. It appears people around here drive by braille. Mine is the third bike in the last six months that I've seen knocked on its side. Unfortunately there is no way for me to tell who or what time it happened.

They were nice enough to pick up the busted out sheet of side mirror glass and place it on my fairing.

This happened to Cyndy's 'Guzzi a while back, in her work parking lot. We found the bike upright with a note stuck on the speedometer with some scribble on it like the guy made it look like he was leaving information. Bike had a bunch of damage. We canvassed all the storefronts and found a Mexican guy and his wife doing laundry across the parking lot. This guy, who could barely speak English, had written down the year, make and model, color and plate number of the pickup truck that knocked the bike over. Five minutes after the CHP showed up, they had his address and phone number. The CHP officer drove directly to the home where the parents tried to cover for the guy but changed their attitude when he called in an arrest warrant for hit-and-run. We had all the info we needed in less than 90 minutes. This is rare, we got lucky. They paid for all the repairs, and it wasn't cheap.

I'll have to do some asking around tomorrow, at my work we have 20-30 drivers who are in and out all the time and who know my bike. I would hope they would say something if they saw anything happen (the place it was parked was away from where any of the drivers would normally park, so i have kind of ruled out any of those guys.) The owner of the tattoo shop across the street rides and is a good dude, I plan to ask over there tomorrow.

The thing that has me a little worried it there is a slight squeaky noise when I come from a stop that lasts from 2000rpm to 2500 or so, a pretty brief period of time. I hope there isn't some serious damage.

People always glare at me like I'm a dick when I park on the sidewalk in front of the supermarket but after a similar situation years ago I don't care (and the shade is nice when its 118 degrees).

I see noobs bikes parked with the back wheel at the parking block all the time. If they get that front wheel out at the same place everyone's rear bumper is this will happen less often. It's your space - use all of it.

i've picked up a couple in my day too.
just can't stand to see one laying on the ground like that, and most people don't know how to properly get one back on it's feet.
once had a lady in a big ole' cadillac back into a test bike (gold wing) in a gas station. she hit it, knocked it over, then pushed it about six feet.
what'd she do?
what any imbecile would do: she drove away, later claiming that it wasn't her, and then after shown evidence, claimed she never saw the bike, thus it wasn't her fault.

The building is responsible for the damage to the bike. Did you complain to them when you came back to the bike?

Fingerprints won't work. Most depts have to send off to have them compared. Even if they do have internal capability, they'll only do it for felony cases, which, despite our feelings, this is not. Finally, contrary to TV shows, you have to have comparison prints to make a match, i.e., someone's prints have to be on file. No file, no match! There are no magic computers which can ID someone with one or two prints. Sorry.

Oh yeah, I was definitely joking about that. Can't imagine someone dusting for prints for a few hundred dollars of motorcycle damage.

In "almost" every country in the world motorcycles are allowed to park on sidewalks.
We are not welcome around here so these things happen.

Definition of a "sidewalk"

Quote:
a paved path for pedestrians at the side of a road.
Nothing mentioned about motorcycles, bicycles or skateboards. Easiest fix is to have a motorcycle area with a narrow entrance that excludes cages. Or allow motorcycles to park in the much abused handicapped spaces. Nothing like seeing a thirty-something person park in a handicapped space and then sprint into the grocery stor just before it is about to close for that 6-pack of beer.
