Exhaust Options

I just picked up a 2001 BMW R1100S to go along with my 2012 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO. Compared to my Ducati, the BMW sounds like a sewing machine. Are there aftermarket pipes that would help bring a little character to the sound? Do you have to buy a full system, or would slip-ons do the job?

I have a full Remus system on my 2001 "S" and it really wakes this bike up. I have owned three S's and this is the first one that feels like it runs correctly and I believe it is all the exhaust.

It is a bit loud, I can't ride it without earplugs but I have heard from by standers it isn't as loud as I think, sounds great when you are on the throttle for sure.

One other thing, it will never sound like a Ducati and don't even try to make it. Nothing sounds like a Duck except the real thing.

The Laser system sounds pretty nice. You can get a lot more sound just by ditching the cat and replacing it with a y pipe

IMHO, the Laser sounds like tin crap next to my Ztechnik Ti system!

I get many compliments on teh sounds it makes

Barely passed sound at Laguna Seca, 92.2 db at full chat coming out of T5.

I also have a 2Bros carbon slip on that is supposedly VERY loud, haven't tried that one....

Have any of you put on a cat delete pipe like the one here on ebay? If so, does it require a special chip? I would think it would help with the sound and the weight.

Old subject, more noise, but basically no more horses. It will get rid of some weight.
The stock cans and convertor are pretty stout. You will notice backfiring once you change them out. I think the convertor muffles the backfires on the stock setup.
Then you will start messing with the TPS, throttle synch, Techlusion Box, air screws, but
the backfiring will remain. HA,HA

The Two Brothers is louder than the Z Technik slip-ons.

I've never done the dyno, but mine will pull wheel VERY easily with the pipes on...... when I went backto stock pipes once (for a trackday), I was very dissapointed in the midrange performance. Could barely get the front off the ground. Now All better with the pipe back on!

So maybe no more grunt at the top, but a definite improvement in the middle, right where it's needed.

I've never mounted the 2bros, the Ztek midpipe won't match and I refuse to put the original cat back on.
Looking for a Laser y-pipe, but not too hard.... I love the Ztek.

ps. No chip or fiddling with stuff, just standard plugs, valve check and tb synch. No popping issues! I love my bike.

Hi all,

Does anyone know what weight difference there is between stock and a aftermarket pipe set,
Remus, Ztech, Lazer, Staintune, maybe someone weighed when changing over, i tend to compare if i can when fitting stuff...
New ride, 04 11s, totally stock, but working on it...

Cheers Jeremy

Will a cat delete pipe like this one on ebay work with the stock mufflers and without a special ECU chip? I would think it would help the sound and lessen the weight.

full Laswer system. dropped about 15 lbs, most of it from the mid-pipe/cat converter going bye-bye.

not a brand I/we have seen before, but looks like it should work fine. should be no issues running stock chip with stock cans and this pipe.

I ran an open pipe/SJ filter/Lennies Induct for probably 4/5 years,it will have a spot at around 4250 as flat as a witches tit but you can jump across it no probs, but then a PC came out and it was happy days!!

Hi,

I always thought that Staintune was the best looking (very shiny stainless steel) for the R1100s, and if you leave out the removable baffles then it will give over 100 db when tested at tracks that are sensitive about noise (I think I scored 103 at 5000rpm at 0.5 metres distance at at Cadwell Park)

I put mine on at about 18k miles (~1999/2000?), and I'm now at 151k miles with only the Y pipe changed for free by Staintune when it cracked. (there may be posts about that)

I did get a chip made up for the Staintune on my bike (with lennies induct)

It's still going.

Adrian

Yep I have been very happy with my Staintune too.
114,000 miles and still sounds great.

I've got the Remus full system and I'm really happy with it. Of course, I bought the bike this way, so I have no idea what it sounds like stock, but it sounds mean now. The popping noises, while maybe not the healthiest things in teh world, sound awesome, and when I really open it up, it screams. Normal riding with light throttle, though, I don't find it to be too loud at all.

I've never seen the point in replacing an over weight stock system with an over weight aftermarket were's the logic in that, look for a Ztech, quality piece of kit that weighs zilch up against the rest,as I recall 50% less than stock system.
