Getting fault code P1397 on 2000 996 C4. Can't figure out how to get to sensor with out dropping engine. Is thereanother way to get to it ?

Not sure what kind of vehicle you have, but here is some general info on the M96 engine:

There are two camshaft position sensors, depending on which side of the engine you are replacing it on the procedure varies. On the right side, remove the A/C compressor, then you can access the sensor.

For the left side sensor, you will have to remove the left side intake manifold runners. Once removed you can remove the sensor.
