I'm trying to help my Grandson with his 2003 Mini. He is 16 and had the car less than a year. I have replaced the alternator twice. He had the low oil pressure problem due to a quick lube mess up and now his P/S is messing up. Sometimes it will start working if the steering wheel is worked back and forth after starting and stopping the engine several times. I'm hesitant to replace the pump because I feel like if the pump is bad it would never work. Do you have any suggestions?

Check the fluid level, If it is full and properly bled, the pump may be faulty. You can test system pressure using a power steering pump gauge.
