What exactly am I looking for at the negative end of the cable for the IBS? I looked at Fig 7 as per a previous post, and my car has nothing but a plain wire to the negative terminal, ie. no L-shaped plastic unit, just the simple connection. Do I conclude then that my R56 does NOT have IBS? Thanks.

If your negative terminal lacks additional small wiring and a plastic housing, you do not have an IBS.

Yep, you most likely do not have an IBS unit. If you want to have us double check, please post an image of your negative terminal for us.
