Very cool! Congrats!
Chemical processing? So you're retiring with 2 hands growing out of your back and an ear growing on your forehead? j/k![]() Now what are you going to do? You need a plan.

Welcome aboard...
Wife: "What are you going to do today?" Hubby: "Nothing." Wife: "But you didn't do anything yesterday." Hubby: "I wasn't finished."

Congrats! I can't wait to join you old farts and not so old farts who have reached a point where they can hang up the Job and focus on Enjoyment - even if it still means Doing Work.
10 years before I can enter what is commonly referred to as "your last 5 years, or one bad day". The way our system works is you decide after years/age qualify to enter "phased retirement" - ie, you get retirement pay, and you keep working. But a limit of 5 years. And after 5, you can't do any work with anything that would count towards that retirement system for 1 year and 1 day, after which you can be re-employed by your old boss or another boss in the system (Fla state). I plan to hit the age and years service requirement in 10 years 2 months and 3 days. No, I'm not counting Depending on outlook I'll either enter then and immediately go retirement and get another job private sector, start a small data storage business, or consult, etc. I'll be 57, have 45 years programming experience, a batchelors in software dev (December!!!) and quite probably a masters in software dev or it project management. Oh, and the Y2038 problem (Y2k for Unix timestamps) so I imagine I can do some high value work for a while....

congrats, I've been looking for an excuse to pull the plug fore a while now and when I see someone like you who has earned it and made it happen, color me jealous.
Hope it goes well and you enjoy the leisure you deserve. |

Congrats. Retirement can go one of two ways. Either it’s a life of blissful sloth while enjoying recreational chemicals and slackitude, or you will start working harder than ever. There is no wrong answer.

44 and done
Thanks to everyone for the kind words and congrats. Sorry it took so long to reply but we headed to BIR right after work on Friday for the SCCA races. It was my son's first races this season in the completely rebuilt STL Miata.
So my plan for now is take a year off, sleep in most days, finish multiple home and car projects, maybe get a nice used RV, go fishing whenever I want, do some international travel, spend more time at the range and exercise daily. Next summer I may start a business or get a part time gig for spending money, who knows. Anyway I really appreciate the great messages sent in from all the Pelican's. DP

Sleeping and doing your thing on your schedule sounds great! To me calling your own shots is the ultimate goal, sounds like you are right there.
