Stress leave from work. How do I arrange that?

I need some time off. Work is crazy, not just the workload but also the politics. It’s hard to get in the game now. My chest feels like it’s going to explode sometimes from the stress. How do I arrange medical leave? I know I need to see my dr but should I also consult an employment attorney? If I end up leaving this job, will future employers find out I took stress leave? The money, while very nice, isn’t worth my life.

No idea but I wouldn't talk to HR until you've seen your doctor.

An employment attorney? Sound expensive.

What is your job? Unless you are being shot at I can't imagine a job so bad that you would be having problems like this?

Dr. First. You want to craft your message in a way that doesn't stigmatize you. Burnout is so very real.

I just got back from vacation. This spring was pretty rotten. I didn't know how I could make it through some days.

Maybe you can tell your doc the truth but s/he can cover for you? A little lung infection or swollen brain lining goes a long way for some relief.

Good luck. Stress can and will kill. Take care of yourself. Please.

Sounds like you've always been self employed.

Go see a md and get a referal for a shrink. Go see shrink and explain the situation and you will get your pass. Do Not blame the company say it is a personal problem.companies become very defensive about that sort of thing.

Now ask me how I know about this stuff? I done got me a 2 month get out of work for free pass way back in 1979. You might say i was one of the first to do it. It is called being able to strategize.

The whole shrink field is all about taking pills now which sedates the problems rather than solves them. So don't let them give you those funny pills or you will turn into a Dipso or Fint.

I'd definitely try first to wrangle a vacation without involving medical or mental health issues.

When your heart pounds and you get tunnel vision at work, or at home when you wake up at night with cold sweats it's time for a rest.

Check out FMLA and see if it covers your situation.

Or a new job....I took a week of vacation, lined one up...then bam, problem solved. Life is short, you've only got one, and there are always other jobs out there. Stress will fuchin' kill you...do you think a hiatus will change your work environment? I never let it reach that point...

FMLA (medical or emotional) will protect you if your doctor certifies that you need it.
Get yourself well and then when you go back to work start looking for another place before the current one puts you in a bad condition again.

Good advice,all.
.
I was self-employed, hadn't has a vacation in 8 years.
Had 3 burn outs in ten years...last one was second cousin to depression.
I held out for as long as I could and sold the business in '08, retired, and left CA.
All is good now.
.
Good luck.

I was a Navy nuclear machinist for over 20 years. Fortunately this was the "old Navy" so we drank an awful lot and no women on the ships maybe that is why there was no stress?! After retirement then a Senior Oracle DBA for 26 years and I was able to pick which companies I worked for and turned down quite a few when the job interview people came across as real A-Holes when it was my turn to ask the questions so I looked some more! Being your own contractor is rough as I have had lots of students who try that and then get out of it and work for a company.
