NASCAR at The Glenn

I know, I know NASCAR, ROUND AND ROUND and Chrome horn etc. But this is different. Great track! Teams have come to take the road courses seriously. More drivers have become good road racers. The Xfinity series race yesterday was good. Had some rain that they drove thru mixing up the field. Check it out you might be surprised. It's on this afternoon. Starting shortly. Cheers Richard

Yep, I am that rare NASCAR fan that loves watching the roadcourses. The Glen, and Sonoma are always good, and like watching the Xfinity cars locally at Mid-Ohio. True skill to hammer an 850 HP 3600# car around the S's, and Chicanes.

I enjoy nascar at the glen. The Glen is my home track, but I stay away for this race. It is always hot as hell, and the sea of drunken humanity gets me riled. So, best to watch on tv for free. I was at the 6 hours of the glen in June and will be there for the vintage races in September. When I was racing, Watkins Glen was always my favorite.

Cool Matt, that you have spent time at that track. Love the elevation changes! Barn burning first laps. They are not easing into this race! Wild seeing them drive outside of the curbs, any paved surface is fair game. Cheers Richard Last edited by tevake; 08-05-2018 at 11:38 AM..

Was a good race Richard. I used to be a big fan, but now only road courses and superspeedways...

Absolutely Bob! I was texting with my Sister thruout, she is a big fan NASCAR and of Chase. And is so very happy. Great last twenty five laps. Actually really good the whole race. Exciting last lap. I love that track! I hope others here got to see it. I had always thought that these cars just lumbered around a road course. Then saw an older one in some vintage races at road Atlanta, doing very well racing with serious sports cars on that road course . Opened my eyes. So I've learned to tune into these races now. Glad I did today! Cheers Richard

Just because they race mostly ovals, don't kid yourself, these guys can drive the twisties as well. Remember when NASCAR vintage came to Portland years ago...some in the Porsche set kind of turning up noses at these "crude" racers. That is, until lap times were noted...make no mistake, even on a road course, these cars are fast.

We have a guy offering rental of old NASCAR cars at one of our local tracks during track days. It's a really neat set-up that he's got - old cup cars with dead stock LS3's for power. Granted, no 800 hp beasts, but all of the handling and brakes these cars have to offer. Even with their reduced power, good luck keeping up with one with an experienced driver behind the wheel. They really haul ass. Oh, and 3,600 pounds? Aren't some new 911's approaching that? Cameros and Mustangs are one tall latte in the cup holder shy of 4,000 pounds.

Chase Elliot now has 1 win under his belt, and looking forward to many more just like his Daddy. Since Junior is gone now, and announcing, Chase will be the new crowd favorite.

And they're gonna be racing in a 400KM in Charlotte on the road course on Sept. 30. I'm sure some of you remember going to Can-Am, GTP, and SCCA races there... it's an interesting course similar to Daytona's road course, but smaller overall. It has been changed a bit since the old Charlotte road course... coupla chicanes have been added to slow things down. https://www.nascar.com/news-media/2018/01/22/charlotte-motor-speedway-introduces-final-road-course-layout/ https://www.nascar.com/video/franchise/up-to-speed/truex-charlotte-road-course-test-not-typical-road-course/

I was impressed with the intensity of the race. They were battling hard from the green to the checkered, which made for an exciting race. Those drivers got quite the workout. The challenge of the track itself, and just getting beat up in the car bouncing off the curbing. It is like a 3 hour prize fight.

I am a big fan of road racing. I work 15 to 20 races a year. A couple of years ago I work the NASCAR "race" at Sonoma. Never again. I'm sorry, but the way the officials manipulate things, its not a race. Its just a show.

Nascar at the Glen is fun to watch, especially 2 wide thru 2-4, too bad they skip the most fun part of the track, 'The Boot' turns 6-9

that's been my impression of NASCAR also Ron. Over the last few years I ve watched more than ever, with my sister, a big fan. Time after time they would find a way to have a caution in the last 10/15 laps and end up with a sprint race for the win. Most teams seemed to count on this and cruise till that last sprint period. Making for pretty dull action most of the race. Now they have the race broken down into segments with points for each segment. To keep them racing a bit more. Yep pretty contrived. This road race turned out much more competive thruout for some reason. Cheers Richard
