With any luck, I just did.

I come down on the side of common courtesy. "Hey, you're next" is just so easy. And polite.

And no, I do not come down on the side of the phone addicts. They annoy me as much as anyone else. I will, however, whenever given the chance, try to say something polite to get their attention. That's pretty darn tough when in traffic, but even there, I will start with a polite toot on the horn or something like that. I'm sure you are the guy who immediately leans on his horn, head out the window screaming loud enough to pop a vein. Like this, from just the other day:

So I immediately cop my usual attitude. "Who's calling?" in an aggressive, angry voice.
Turns out it was someone I only met once, about 10 years ago. It was my friend Ed's son, calling to tell me Ed passed away last night.
The jerks and the machines making robo calls and endless solicitations are winning. They are turning me into a jerk, too.
No, no one is turning you into a jerk. You've done a fine job of that yourself.

Absolutely. Let's get out terminology straight.

And yes, in that case, I was definitely being childish and messing with the guy. I copped to that in my very first post.

We constantly hear all about how rude folks are today.
Phone addicts, close-standers, loud talkers, slow pokes...you name it.

Now it's my turn...I've also been in line at ( insert random establishment here ) and the person in front of me was unaware their turn was up. I waited a few moments, and if the inattention continued, I said "You're next".
No muss, no fuss, no huff...nothing. If I remember correctly, the person probably said " oh, thanks" or something along those lines.

My point? I see that as a perfect opportunity to take an action that's counter to the current social temp we hear so much about.
Exactly. How hard is it to be polite and make everyone's day just a wee bit better?

Yup. I think he sees opportunities that most of us miss.

Yeah, but you know, some folks just aren't happy unless they are offended and/or pissed off. Patrick strikes me as one of those. So, look at it this way - you just made him very happy.

Lots of people look at their phones when bored (or when they shouldn’t). Takes 3 seconds to say “you’re next.” Is that too much? Better to risk an altercation???

No, seriously, it is the same crap Mexican food but way less expensive
I have a feeling the nearest Del Taco is 2000 miles away. I spent a month in rural Mexico and Taco Bell is better than some of the stuff they serve - and much more boring than some of the other food. In China (a town in northeastern Mexico) I had some pazole made with goat meat that was incredible. All of the roadside carne asada I has was god awful -like BBQed leather.

That was basically the issue with the guy. There were two lines with several people in each one. The cashier in our line was standing there looking at several feet of empty floor in front of him. SOMEBODY was going to step up and order. I figured it was basically me or one of the people in the other line.

If we really want to get Higgy with it we shall describe it as "yammering away."

This guy only "inconvenienced" you because you wanted him to. Because you find being polite to be "inconvenient".

Worth repeating:
