Bought Another FJ40

It's been almost ten years since I sold my '71 Land Cruiser. I had owned it for almost 25 years, putting several hundred thousand miles on it. While I have had my '93 for five or six years now, and it's a far, far more capable truck, I have always missed the old FJ40. So I finally broke down and bought one.

This one is certainly in a lot better shape than the old one. No rust, and several very worthwhile upgrades. Biggest one is that it has a coil over / four link suspension setup on both ends. That, and it has lockers in both differentials as well. The first few drives with it have me pretty excited - it seems like a very capable off-roader.

I'm looking forward to getting it all muddy and dirty. It's way too clean right now. I think I might need a second set of wheels and tires for it, something with a bit more aggressive tread, for when I want to take it up in the snow. Fortunately, wheels and tires are pretty darn cheap for this thing. Easy to store, too - they won't take up much garage space. Anyway, here she is:

That is freakin’ awesome. Still have the Toyota engine/trans? Coil over front suspension? I’ve never seen that, but other than lusting, I don’t have a lot of experience with 40s.

Looks fantastic, what's the story on it? From your part of the world?

I was with my uncle Robert when he bought a new '77 FJ40 in Santa Rosa. He soon moved to Bellevue, ID, a very rural small down near Sun Valley. He felt self-conscious about being a new doctor there with a new Landcruiser, so he spray painted a fender and the vents on the hood and fenders flat black to give it some fake patina. I was shocked, but can appreciate it now. His little house there turned out to have the bones of a cottonwood log cabin my uncle discovered when he removed some sheet rock. Much nicer inside with a lot of the sheet rock removed!

After many years, he parked it in an open air car port and let it rot. My brother, who was into Jeeps and such big-time for years, kept trying to buy it from Robert. My uncle kept rebuffing him with super high price offers, referring to others that sold for this or that. We couldn't figure out why he was being so unreasonable. It became clear when he gave it to my brother as he was dying of cancer. He always played us, and this was classic.

The FJ is a little rough, but has great real patina now (including the flat black areas). My brother put a plate on it- UNKL BOB. He always liked being called Bob, but I never gave up calling him uncle Robert.

That's nice! I'm jealous. Are those 31" tires on 15's? Hard to tell anymore there are so many options when it comes to tires and wheels.

There is a lot of weirdness going on with the 40, but I suppose that's probably why you bought it.

Sweet! I'm nearing the end of my 1970 FJ40 restoration. Have been at it these last 5 years.
I'll see if I can post a few pics.

Very nice, Jeff.

We had two when I was a kid and I, like you, have always wanted another.

Enjoy!
