I haven't seen anyone suggest a Golf R. They are a hoot to drive, even without an ECU flash.

The R is a good choice and I want to love it, but I struggle with a $40K+ golf.
I suppose it helps to think of it as a cheap S3 instead... with an available shifter.

CPO S4 is a good DD also, super Q-ship and quick as fucQ. rare in manual but it exists. Not a hatch though. Good CPO from Audi. Do not keep one day past CPO however.

Focus RS was so close to being the second coming of the ultra hatch, but let down by its head gasket and quirky rear drive unit.

Fingers crossed for a hatchback/wagon Sti with 2.5L DI engine, 6MT, and triple real diffs. Surely they can't hold out on the EJ25 much longer

A GTI is probably a great bet.
And many choices from $5k to $15k

When I bought my MCS I was also looking at the Volvo C30R now Polestar. Also a hoot to drive, a little more refined than the Mini, better finish. Loved the funk of it but, clutch feel left me wanting. In the end, the wife preferred the Mini so, happy wife,,,,

2013/2014 C30 Polestar should be close to your sweet spot and not an everyone’s got one.

I wasn’t aware of the Focus RS issues, that’s a damn shame.

I think the Golf R is great on paper, but everything I have seen points to the same issue the GTi has, it's to refined to be "that fun". I think maybe a good exhaust and tune might change that.

I had high hopes for the RS, but alas

Subaru has a place in my heart, but every version gets uglier than the last.

Those are nice, but it is just another Toyota as is my Alfa... they nice the fun to drive mark by a mile.

If I can find a way out of my lease I'm going to look real hard at the Golf R, STi, Abarth, maybe even a Chevy SS... hard not to look at 430HP and magnitohydodynamic suspension. Its like an AMG or M car but faster, cheaper and more reliable.

I would love a nice used RS3, but I think those are DSG only

RS3 is DSG only, correct. Super cool cars though, that 5-cylinder sounds awesome.

Chevy SS is interesting. My only knock is how bland they look. A used CTS-V would be another similar option in a sedan. The same money would also buy you a pretty nice S4 or M3 sedan, both of which can also be had with a stick but would be a bit more risky on the reliability front.

Yea, I agree, which makes sense as thats what is supposed to be lol

Its hard to beat the joy of a big ol V8, but I still tend to lean toward a Golf R APR stg 1/2 and you have a DD monster on your hands, that can cruise through Michigan winters.

Been meaning to log in since I noticed this thread and suggest the Golf R. I have a '16 and can confirm that it's a super fun car. Enough so that I don't mind parking my 911 for the winter anymore because I get get to drive the R now.

I'd say it's also very practical. Can fit 4 real sized adults in relative comfort and is plenty zippy. If you need more than 300ish HP for driving around on the street, you're doing it wrong and/or should have your license revoked... JMHO.

Will also say, my brother has an Audi RS5 which I have driven... another super fun car, but probably not as practical as a Golf R.

I wouldn't suggest that 300hp isn't enough, but the refinement and power delivery of the Golf's is often to the detriment of fun.

Its the same reason many prefer the driving experience of a slow old air-cooled over a 996TT, I think it was said "its a very fast Camery".

That said I still think the grin factor from a nearly 400HP Golf R with an audible exhaust would really be fun. Fun factor from stock R to APR R is night and day.

I've never had a car with to much power, and likely never will

I wouldn't be afraid to buy a Focus RS as a DD. Ours has 96K miles and has had no issues. It will have to go in for the head gasket recall before the end of the year, but not really worried about it.

You will read about how the suspension is rough or bouncy which is completely overblown. The Macan S is just slightly smoother than the RS with the RS being way more fun drive. The RS is a keeper for us; the Macan S is not.

I would love to think that the head gasket issue isn't and issue, but there are to many people with issues for me to ignore it. It might not be a high percentage, but its still a chance at a very high engine issue, I already have a 911 to worry about. lol

Which is sad because the RS is an amazing car.

I like it, but it just isn't a fun car, I feel a manual and a bit of exhaust would change that.

I'd like to stay under the price of the Giulia by a good deal if I am not leasing... The less I spend on the DD the more I can spend on the SC and it's a Porsche to every part has 10X P-car tax on it.

Your daughter doesn't need a 50K car

323GTX's are sooooo cool, but they are unicorns.

I have always wanted a BMW, I love the early 2000 330i

But since my Alfa is a lease, I though I might have a chance of getting out of it if I got back into a Fiat. Honestly the Abarth is a smile a mile car.

I also love the MCS, have always wanted one of those.

Maybe I can put the car up next spring for a lease take over.
I have a giulia quadrifoglio. it is an astoundingly fun car and I cannot get enough of it. it is a beast of a DD and even a worthy "Special occasion" car.

the zf 8sp if engaging as a dual clutch and is nearly as effective.
