First Sheriff Dean is a decent man, the best you could want to serve a community. His deputies are cut from the same cloth, just the best. I am damn crushed by what they have seen and the loss of one of them, Sgt. Ron Helus.

Our society uses the term hero far to often, but Sgt. Helus is IN FACT a true hero. He and the CHP officer performed their duty with incredible courage, they did not hesitate to run to the sound of danger, place themselves in the line of fire and disrupt the murderer from continuing. That is heroic.

Reports now are that Sgt. Helus confronted the murderer and shielded others from the gunfire.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Families of all of the victims and those that are tending to them and conducting the investigation.

Real steps toward safer environment need to happen. Not knee jerk proven failures of the past.
History can be used here but will not because of superficial easy answers that reactionary people want.

Do we not care because most of them are black-on-black shootings?
Does it only matter if the shooter is white?
Or is it that one shooting at a time doesn't matter, it's only important if multiple people get shot in the same place at the same time?

What is that magic number, 2, 3 5?

Why is the location so important? A shooting on the street or in an alley doesn't seem to be a big deal, but in a school or night club or a concert it's totally different. why is that?

Because that's what the news tells us.

If the media sensationalism causes this type of reaction in sane people, is it any wonder why lunatics react to violently to the hype?

Stop the hype, stop the sensationalism, and the copy-cat bull **** will go away too.
But that will never happen if we allow ourselves to get caught up in the BS and contribute to it.
It'll never happen if we don't say ENOUGH!
Until we admit the real causes and address them, it'll only continue to get worse.

And for the record, the real causes are:

1) mental illness.
2) media hype and sensationalism that provides motivation for people with mental illness to get notoriety and fame from killing people.

I go to this bar all the time and likely know of or have acquainted some of the deceased. Thousand Oaks is historically one of the safest cities in CA. Proof this can happen anywhere.

This is NOT Chicago where shootings and murders are more or less expected. This occurred in a venue where people were having fun. Big difference.

It would be interesting to see the responses of some of you morons if this happened to your friends or family.

This is a societal issue. We are more concerned about the next gen iPhone than we are about helping people in need and caring for those who are ill and mentally ill. This guy would have likely tried to kill with a salad fork if that was his goal..

The real issue to confront, in my opinion, is a Constitutionally correct method to screen out the mentally ill from owning guns. According to reporting, this shooter is an ex-Marine who, clearly, was suffering from PTSD.

Until we have a way to deny firearms to U.S. citizens that are deemed mentally unstable, this will continue to happen on a regular basis and for at least a generation after a method has been established and enacted.

There are heroeic law enforcement, and they do save lives.

I have gained a lot of respect for French law enforcement because if serious incidents they have had to deal with, and their approach and selflessness in action.
