I did a search, and maybe I misread the article, but it looks like Like A Rock didn't go to #1 at all, peaked at 12.

https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7833734/bob-seger-songs-best-hits-list

And looking at the top 100 of the week that Like A Rock peaked, I can see why it didn't move my needle - most of the songs on the top 100 were stuff that I've either never heard of or don't care about so I wasn't even listening to top 40 radio in 1986.

Funny, I was just in the Michigan upper peninsula deer hunting. I took a ride into town with a relative in his old Chevy truck, and that song came on the radio.

Debuted in April. I was on my first long cruise with the Navy.

I'd have to search my log book, but I think we were in Singapore.

One learns a lot about the members here when they post comments concerning music.

In university learning all sorts of engineering stuff that I would never use in the future other than how to write reports and test plans. More into AC/DC

Like A Rock - No, didn't like it. Bob Seger sang dozens of songs. I listened to these Fav's endlessly:

Fire lake, Against the wind, We’ve got tonight, Night moves, Stil the Same

Traveling music I called it.......From late 1980 till early early 1988, I ran my much modifed Suzook GS1000 from 13,000 to over 108,000 miles......The bike had a road race fairing, High compression big bore kit, big carbs, exhaust, cams, low bars and tweaked suspension. Fast in it's day.

Tucked in that Fairing was a AM-FM cassette player with no speakers. Put speakers in my helmet before anyone was doing that. Helmet to bike was a coiled telephone cord with a radio shack jack on each end......

Bob Seger was my fav, followed by Jackson Browne.......While out riding, I should have been staying home, studying for promotional exams......Over the winter, I'd read whole textbooks onto cassette tapes.........In the spring, I'd ride down Calif Hwy 1 "studying" by listening to my tapes........Many years ago.....

When Night Moves (recorded in Muscle Schoals) came out....I was just getting my drivers license, Frampton came alive, Keef was a junkie headin' for jail, and freakin' disco....

Seger's Live Bullet, NMs, Stranger in Town, and Against the Wind albums (and Bruce's BTR, Darkeness OTEOT)...were constants....

Seger would sell out the coliseum here faster than anyone back in the day....still draws 'em in too...

But that song sucked

I really like Segar's work, but don't really care for that song.
Never paid it no never-mind and don't blame him for selling out and cashing in on it.

Traveling man, beautiful loooser, good stuff. Heck even that Katmandu cliché was better than like a rock.

That song was never a favorite of mine. It was like a million other songs that were OK to hear on the radio, but not a fav.

I did like Roll me away. Especially when I really listed to the words. And this part:

Stood alone on a mountain top
Starin' out at the Great Divide
I could go east, I could go west
It was all up to me to decide.

I remember talking to a fried I worked with that was born and raised in Cuba. He and some other friends literally built a boat in secret from scraps and sailed to America. He is now a US citizen as his wife, and he has two great kids. He loves this country and is a great addition to the country. He talked about the lack of freedom in Cuba. I had traveled a lot in the country even back then. Lots more now.

I have driven all across this country. To go to the continental in Colorado in the mountains, is something everyone should see. I played that song as we went through Loveland Pass. The freedom to just go, without any government permits, or approval is just something we need to really appreciate.

I have been through the one in New Mexico on I-40 many times, and it is pretty boring.

U.S. 40 - Continental Divide - New Mexico. - U.S. 40 - The National Road on Waymarking.com

Just a wide spot on the road. Kinda like the Eastern continental divide on I-40 outside of Ashville, NC. BTDT as well.

Gotta agree with ya on that, stinky list of music except for "Your Wildest Dreams" by the Moody Blues and 'Higher love" by Steve Winwood.

The tune seems to have not caught favor with many of you. You might have therefore not listened to the lyrics. For those:

Stood there boldly
Sweatin' in the sun
Felt like a million
Felt like number one
The height of summer
I'd never felt that strong
Like a rock

I was eighteen
Didn't have a care
Working for peanuts
Not a dime to spare
But I was lean and
Solid everywhere
Like a rock

My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose
My steps were quick and light
And I held firmly
To what I felt was right
Like a rock
..........................................

And I stood arrow straight
Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these hustlers and their schemes
I stood proud, I stood tall
High above it all
I still believed in my dreams

.................................

What's not to like about that? Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse. (Where's that gif?)

Good gawd, what an awful time in music. I got to 50 on that list, and I don't think there is one song I would care to hear today .

Whadayamean, there are several Madonna selections and one from Barry Manilow, and of course the biggie:

I Wanna Be A Cowboy by Boys Don't Cry

That list makes me really happy that ZZ Top had Afterburner, and AC/DC had Who made Who. The Stones only had Dirty Work, but lots of other songs to listen to.

Rock n'roller defines me musically, but I don't think any one band/singer/song as a era in my life. I really liked Pearl Jam, but like any other hit bands the obsession was very short lived. I would think of any era in my life more as a mix tape.

One exception would be CCR, early 80's had a GF who played it (and Eurythmics) over and over. It was fun and after a year we packed it in on good terms, but I've never cared for CCR since.
