They are not filling seats very easy. My buddy is a polit and just kicked a kid back into simulators after he slammed the jet into the runway so hard they bounced 3x. He said he was sick to his stomach over how violent the landing was. He got on the PA and apologized.

He is does some sort of check out / instruction and said this cat was a mess when it came time to land. I am not a pilot but the way he explained it to me was that a simulator really cannot fix this, it is something you need to understand and be able to do in the real world. If that makes sense.

Concerning bottle to throttle, from what I have gathered these pilots blow off a LOT of steam when laid over. They push that 8 hour limit to the minute.

I thought that movie was anomaly, turns out it is not.

Idiot got what he had coming.

I know my pilot neighbor is pretty hard core about 12hr bottle to throttle, but if he’s not flying watch out. Dude will hurt you!

It sounds to me like your friend was giving Initial Operating Experience (IOE) to a pilot new in the airplane and/or the airline. Landings in Transport Category jets can certainly be simulated well in a modern simulator.

Concerning bottle to throttle, from what I have gathered these pilots blow off a LOT of steam when laid over. They push that 8 hour limit to the minute.

Who are you referring to? Pilots from essentially ALL airlines? Or JAL pilots? I can tell you from 27+ years as an airline pilot that the vast majority certainly do NOT blow off steam on a layover and/or ever push that 8 hour bottle to throttle limit. Most are simply too aware that their careers are at stake, at the very least. I would say, however, it's probably true that many will have a beer or two, or a glass or two of wine, but that's generally it.

I thought that movie was anomaly, turns out it is not.

Your initial thought WAS correct. That movie was a total anomaly. Do not believe otherwise.
As an additional note, I believe that the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) BAC limit is .02, so this guy would've been at nearly 10 times the limit for pilots.

Because of this issue, JAL has now instituted a 24 hour bottle to throttle policy, which is the strictest in the industry.

FWIW I went to the Targa Newfoundland Rally this September as a support crew member. Drivers blew every morning. Word was five beers by 8:00PM and you would blow zero. No one was sidelined and there was drinking a-plenty with dinner.

The JAL pilot was 0.18? I think two bottles of wine and a pitcher of beer is a lie.

I guess I would lie too?

If he is telling the truth perhaps a metabolism issue? I know peeps that stink the next day after ten 4% 12 oz beers.

Just talking.

Nope, there have been several incidents recently with Japanese flight crew and pilots showing up drunk.

Not gonna argue with you as you appear to be a pilot. My friend is in his 30's. We also discussed he is a fetus among dinosaurs. I recently was on a 2 hour layover in ATL and noticed evey pilot in the airport was over 60 years old.

Maybe the young bucks are kicking it up a little while the old guys are sleeping? My bud had a pretty wild tear through stewardess' for a few years before he got engaged.

My bud says sim is good but real world is better here is a convo with the sim instructor.

There’s a huge looming pilot shortage because of impending retirement. The military is having a hard time keeping their pilots because after their first tour, they can leave for big money at the airlines. It’s hitting the international carriers worse but they are starting to throw big money at American pilots to lure them overseas. Most of the major airlines are now providing scholarship style programs to new pilots, where they pay for flight school ($100k+ investment) in exchange for a commitment of X years. Meanwhile air travel increases every year.
