Moving to Cleveland, need some advice.
Hey gang,
We'll be moving to Cleveland, Ohio from Tampa, Fl in June. I've begun the housing search and found all sorts of information regarding crime & safety, vibe, demographics etc. It's difficult to decipher some of this information, as it's slightly swayed one way or another depending on the source so, does anyone have any tips? We'd like to live in a safe place, school districts don't matter to much, well kept neighborhoods. I'm sure some of you have or currently live in that area, any light shed on the matter would be really helpful. thanks all Erik |

I offer no info concerning Ohio just here to say I love Tampa and make a trip over about once every year or two just to go to Berns.
My only suggestion is to go visit there once you have some neighborhoods picked out. Google street view is also a good way to look around and see if one street is good and 2 streets over is trouble. Carry on.

Seems like the best way to go about is to rent a place then you can take your time and get the place figured out

My barometer is to go to the local grocery store in the neighborhood(s) you’ve shortlisted. That will give you a good cross section of your neighbors.

You need a better job headhunter.
Doesn't that seem like the best advice? Presumably you're moving for work. Wouldn't daily commute for you (and Mrs. HiFi) impact where you're going to live? And a lot of other factors that you won't really appreciate until you actually live there for a few months?

I spent quite a bit of time in Westlake/Bay Village while a family member was at Cleveland Clinic for several months. Very nice area. East of the city, Chagrin Falls and surrounding area is nice.
I had a generally negative opinion about Cleveland before that. It's actually an interesting town with lots to do. |

Chagrin Falls has a Hermes shop. Real estate prices reflect that. Old as eff houses but well tended. Cool place. Nearby is Pepper Pike and Gates Mills. A layer or two above. I mean they have Polo fields. You probably need to be a baller or a CPA firm partner. Out west in Bay Village, newer homes, retail parks, more modern living. Pretty palatable if you like that. There are several towns in closer that rock. Maybe Rocky River? Check that. Closer but more of an old school feel than Westlake/Bay Village. Shaker/University Heights, old but swanky living. The full Cleveland. Traditional successful Jewish base and perhaps takes a while to perceive belonging there. Not a bad choice. For a regular dude that has a good solid job with a decent salary, I say Brecksville/Independence. You will not lose a dime on real estate (same for Westlake/Bay Village) Even Fairlawn on the far west side of Akron with quick connect on 77 to Cleveburg where LeBron has a "modest" bungalow.

Do you want city or suburbs?
Having not be to Cleveland, I would rent first and figure out the city. The nuance of a city is subtle. It takes time to figure it out. |

If someone asks you if you want a "steamer", just tell them no...

Have you been in the winter?
![]() I actually really like Cleveland in the summer, really nice walkable downtown with lots of good bars and restaurants and right on the water. All of the arenas are downtown so it makes for a really good game day environment. Friendly people and a really diverse cultural environment. But the winters are freaking brutal.

Lived in northern Ohio for a long time. What do you do for a living? Where is work going to be? How much do you want to spend on a home? Is being on the water of any concern to you? Remember the water freezes on the north coast. Does commute time to the downtown Cleveland matter? PM me if you want to discuss in more detail.

Need a bit more info. Where will your work be located? Like the suburbs? Buy? Rent?

Additionally, will you travel which will negate the commute time variable? Data is key here. The Cleveland metropolitan area is massive. Two plus million peeps. It garners shiet and much deserved, but still, post it's heydey, head and shoulders above (in some ways) countless rivals. That said, I would rather live in Columbus or Cinti. But that's not this topic.

It seems a decent area as I have passed through.. For a track.head ; Mid Ohio, Nelson Ledges and PIRC are all a short road trip/ travel away. And my OH based racing friends seem OK despite being from OH.

I think it is one of a few Midwest cities that is changing for the better. The burbs are nice, the downtown is changing. Lot of overcast days.
I would work with a realtor, perhaps rent until you can find the community you wish to live in, Good luck. There is a song on you tube: Hope this helps! Cleveland Sucks Song https://youtu.be/NmFEYMoeSyQ
