Robbery in Progress - BOLO for squirrel with Santa Hat

We have 2 large frog statues in a flower bed that wife decorates each Christmas with a Santa hat. A couple of days ago she noticed one of the hats missing but assumed it had blown off. Next day she looked out and could see a squirrel mugging the frog with the remaining hat so she grabbed the camera and waited to see what would happen. Shortly the squirrel took off with the hat and was gone:

The hat will soon be part of a nest in a nearby tree. It should stand out so we will watch for it.

We have random pecans turn up in the garden, and yard every year. I have no idea where the closest pecan tree is. Likely in some back yard in an neighborhood I don't get into. I have often wondered how big a tree rat's territory really is. We have one tree just on the other side of our fence that has two squirrel nests in it.

I like.

Being bright red you might spot them up in a local tree.

That's hilarious! You're contributing to the warmth and welfare of a couple of squirrel pups. There are worse things...

Ugh, I used to find pecans in the yard from time to time. The worst was when I'd find them a little late, maybe because they were hidden among other plants. I swear the roots on pecan anchor themselves in the core of the planet. And if you cut them off at the ground, they just keep coming back. It's amazing that the planet isn't overrun with pecan trees based on how hard it was to get rid of pecan sprouts/saplings.

That's headed for a colorful nest. Squirrels must be color blind.

Pecan trees are easy to get rid of, just plant bamboo all around them

That is so wrong. Amazing that you caught him in the act. Hopefully the PD will be able to ID him from that amazing photograph and incarcerate the thieving little bastage.

If the police catch him or her, it's going to be awfully hard in the line up! Not to sound racist, but they all kinda look alike....

Clever little rodents, squirrels. I feed them daily and have 20 or so that drop by for food; seeds, pecans, walnuts, filberts and peanuts. Over the past several years, I have noted plastic grocery bags tucked over the tops of dreys like a tent fly but have not witnessed the actual construction.
No doubt, the hats are tucked into a drey as a nice warm and cozy mattress.

Love the photo. Better keep an eye on the UPS packages....

The only reason she was able to catch him in the act was she grabbed the camera and set it to sport/action mode which continuously snaps pics as long as you hold the shutter release down ( I think she had about 41 shots in total over just a couple of seconds of time).

As to the Moose? We already have a resident Rocky around here, a raccoon which prowls around at night when he isn't reading Gideon"s Bible....

Territories are up to about 7 acres. I have a few that come to feed from a few blocks away.
