Video card specs for size and resolution
I need to buy a new computer for my engine building room. Want something that will drive a 34" to 43" high resolution monitor.
What do you look for in video card specs that will drive a 34" - 43" monitor at 4096 x 2304/2160 or so?

The size of the monitor is not the important thing. My current computer's motherboard ran 4K just fine and it is several years old. I did upgrade to a GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti for my mapping and graphic work.
Just check the specs of the motherboard on board video card. It may well do it if speed is not the big issue.

What are you going to drive at those resolutions? My old GeForce 2 could display that resolution but if you are doing 3D models or HDV you will want something far more powerful than doing a bunch of cells in a spreadsheet.
Had I the money I would get a new Samsung double wide curved monitor. 32:9 aspect ratio. ![]()

This is just for viewing copious tear down pics with notes and PDF manual for the 928 rebuild. A year ago I mounted a 34" TV on the wall and hooked up my old MacBookPro and I think I got 1024 at best. No zooming, no detail and even the manual was just clunky. Usable but barely. New iMac 6 months ago has spoiled me.
Given Glen's advice, I think I'll get a 2015 iMac and a big monitor, those two should work well together for what I need to do.

Yup. Doesn't take much (these days) to look at pictures.
Odd that your old MBP didn't have better resolution unless it was a cable issue. Then again, I don't know the specs on Apple products.

I forgot you are using a MAC. I am a Windows guy and the motherboards all have pretty good video built in. I would ask a Mac person what the base resolution is for a Mac.

My old MBPro has 1920. I think it was the TV I got more than anything. Anyway, I'm going to get a 4K Retina iMac and 4K screen. Seems so obvious now.

Yea, I am sure that setup will come with a photo viewer program and a way to sort the images into categories or customer jobs.

Thanks Glen. Yes, Apple has Preview. Every customer gets their own Dropbox folder with tons of pictures of their order so they can see it and confirm it and I can ask them questions and point out things of concern, etc., see below. Older iMac and 27" monitor are fine for this kind of display when laying it out again after it's all been plated. Invoicing is easiest just looking at pictures.
The set-up I need will be dedicated for the engine and 915 building room. I don't think you can have to much size and resolution in this case. ![]()
